Ever since I've started my period (9 years
of age) they've always been long and
heavy!! When I got old enough my mom asked
the Doctor what we could do about it, and
she said really the only option is Birth
Control, so we picked up the prescription
(exactly 1 year ago), but shortly after I
was diagnosed with knee problems and my
knee doctor suggested not to start the
Birth Control, and I also didn't want to
start because my mom was giving me all
sorts of problems about it.
Anyhow, my knee problems have been fixed
and I am able to be on Birth Control now,
so this past week I went in and asked the
Doctor if she could send in the
prescription. Well, she explained how to
start it (the Sunday after you've started
your period) and then she was talking
about how it wouldn't protect for the
first two weeks??
Well my question is, so I start the Sunday
after I've started my period, right? So
for that FIRST two weeks I won't be
protected? How long does it take to be
affective? Can someone please explain to
me how to do this? My doctor already did
and I picked up some of what she was
saying, but she tends to get side tracked,
and I can't ask anyone else because this
is being kept totally confidential. Please
any help will be greatly appreciated!!
Thank You.

She's wrong. If you do a Sunday start, you
will be protected in one week unless this
is some special kind of birth control I've
never heard of. The one week waiting
period is needed to rule out the
possibility of a viable, ovulated egg. The
birth control itself is already working
within a day to prevent new ovulation. You
just need to wait one week in case there
is an egg already there, so it has time to
die.
You will be protected after ONE week. If
you start on the hypothetical Sunday the
10th, then Sunday the 17th you will be
protected. Seven days.

ohhh, well I'm supposed to start on the
5th of February, which is a Tuesday, so
then once I start on Sunday the 10th then
on the 17 I will be protected? Wow, you
make it sound so much more, not difficult.
So from then on out I won't have to worry
about waiting a week, right? Just when i
first start the pill?
Sorry if I am making this more complicated
then it has to be..

I am slightly freaked out that the pretend
dates I made up actually WORK in your
situation!! It's not complicated, huh?
Yes. The 10th of February is the Sunday
after your period is supposed to begin.
That is when you can start the pills.
Seven days later on the 17th you will be
fully protected. And yes, from then on out
you won't have to worry about waiting when
you start the new packs.
You could always just start this Sunday
you know. You don't *have* to wait for
your period. Same process applies. You
could start today, too. It doesn't matter.
Doctors say "Sunday" because it is an easy
day to remember.

haha, I know I was like "how in the world
did she know the exact dates?".
It actually isn't that complicated,
doctors always make everything 10 times
more then it has to be.
What about the time thing? You're supposed
to take it at the same time everyday for
it to fully work, right? Or is that a myth
too..

You should take it within 6 hours of the
same time every day. No, it doesn't have
to be "Exactly at 10:34 AM!" but getting
within the hour is just more efficient and
prevents you from forgetting. Just make it
part of your wake up or bed time schedule.
"Brush teeth, take pill, etc".
