Lowered Hcg Levels
Posted: 04-28-04 23:22pm

I am 7 wks pregnant. On thursday night (almost a week ago) I began spotting. This continued until this morning. Fri night I had blood tests with hcg levels at 1939. Blood test was repeated onmonday with hcg levels at 1917 - very bad sign. The bleeding never approached what a normal period would be for me, but was fairly constant. Is it possible that the baby is ok even with the lower hcg level? Or is it possible that the lab made a mistake on one of the blood tests? My breasts have gotten bigger over this past week which indicates to me that the pregnancy is still viable - but i'm not sure. Supposed to have an ultrasound later today and am very nervous about it. Was wondering if 'disappearing twin' would screw with hcg levels. I'm kind of desprate for info here. Please help - is my pregnancy doomed?

I can't imagine how frightened you must be. The sad thing is that you will just have to wait it out. Unfortunately, an hour can last an eternity. I am almost eleven weeks pg and remember the unbearable first three weeks. If it is any consolation, I have heard a hundred different stories about dropping hcg levels, disappearing symptoms, bleeding, cramping and so forth, where the baby was full term and healthy. Just try to relax, and remember if it does turn bad, it is not the end of the world. Everything happens for a reason. I will keep you in my thoughts over the next few days.

Lowered Hcg Levels

The ultrasound was unclear. The gestational sac was evident, but poorly defined - which was unusual. Also, the shape was irregular whereas it would normally be quite round. The size is also too small for seven weeks. He said that it looked more like five weeks, which does correspond to the first bloodtest where the doctor said that the hcg levels were also more indicative of 4.5 to 5.5 weeks rather than seven. These dates really aren't possible though. Doctor cautioned me that it didn't look promising, but he did another blood test to be sure. Still waiting for the results. It was way too early to see any real features or heart beat. I am wondering if the baby died two weeks ago and just hasn't been expelled yet.

Sad usually when your hcg levels drop, that means that the baby is deteriating (sp) . When I had a tubel, they put me on kimotherapy to rid my body of the baby (i know sounds horrible. It was), and that is what they watched for.. They watched to make sure that my hcg levels went down. This mean the baby was leaving my body.

Sammisa,
thank-you for sharing your knowledge and experience. The confusing thing is that I completely stopped spotting two days ago and still have not expelled the pregnancy. Still no word from the doctor.
I have no idea what is happening inside my body and it is really starting to get to me. I just want to know if this is still a viable pregnancy or not. If not, I need to get over this and move on, otherwise I want to be able to look forward to the coming months. I have stopped reading the pregnancy books that I bought because I just get upset. I hate this.

I feel so bad for you. It honestly doesn't sound at all good from what I read about the u/s and hcg levels. I just don't know what I would do in your shoes. I would loose myself I think. I really hope everything turns out ok, I pray it does!! I"m soo sorry you are going through this. I guess your stopped bleeding is a good sign, or at least a small glimps of hope? I will pray for you right now!!

Well, doc finally called back. Although my hcg levels have risen marginally he has declared that I have a blighted ovum that has no chance of development. I am scheduled for a d&c tomorrow morning.
Thank-you so much for your input and help. I hope this forum helps other women out with their questions. Although my husband and I are very upset about this outcome, this wasn't a planned pregnancy. It did teach us that we are definitely ready to have kids and we will try again in a few months. Good luck to everyone.

Sorry to hear your news, i've been through three blighted ovum pregnancies myself. Hang in there and don't stop trying. They told me after my third I would not be able to have children. About a month before I was going to have my tubes tied (i could'nt go through it again) completed unplanned I got pregant and have twin boys that just turned four. Hang in there, my thoughts are with you and your husdand.

I am so sorry, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you are not ready to be parents, when I had my problem, the doctor said that as soon as my hcg level was low enough, we could start trying again. Well I wish the best of luck to you, and don't let this one get you down, it doesn't mean that every pregnancy you have will end the same way. I bet next time it will be fine Laughing good luck... Byeeeee for now..
