37 Weeks And I Have Questions???
Posted: 09-12-03 14:02pm

Hello everyone!!

I am currently 37 wks 5 days pregnant with my first child. At my check up this week the doctor said I was 60% efface and 1 cm dilated. After the exam I experienced some light bleeding & am now just spotting here and there. The doctor told me to expect this. I am now having lower back pain and every once in a while something that feels like period cramps. They are not frequent enough to time so I don't think they are contractions. I am not exactly sure what they are. Do any of you have any idea's?? Also with me being 60% efface could that mean that I am going to have this baby in the next week or is that the same as dilation it could be another two or three weeks before I reach 100%???

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi! I just had a baby last october, so I know what you are going through. I'm sure that what you're going through is normal. You're probably going to have the baby in the next couple of days, it being that you're already 60% effaced. When I was pregnant with ethan, I never had steady contractions (not even when I was in labor). The friday before he was born, I was having contractions and went to the hospital because I too was only 37 weeks. I was only 25% effaced and 1cm dilated. Early sunday morning (around 3am) I woke up because my water had burst. I was only 4cm dilated and had went to 10 within 3 hours. Ethan was born at 10:19am sunday. It can happen that fast, so if you're having those pains (which are probably just contractions) I would go on to the hospital to have it checked out. You may just be more dilated than you think.

Thanks so much for the advice.

I am just worried that I will go into labor and not know. My mom had all of us kids in under 3 hours from her first contraction. My sister was enduced and had both of hers in less than 8 hours (they say enduction takes longer but she didn't).. So I will probably go fast once it starts. I just worry that I won't know its started. My husband is oversea's and wont be home for the birth and he has all these questions about whats going on and la da la da la da... That I can't answer cause I don't know whats going on. Lol. Here I am rambling. Thanks for the advice!

You're very welcome. Smile trust me...You'll know when the real labor begins. The contraction became a lot worse for me. I'm sure if you call the doctor and tell him everything that's going on, he'll want you to come in to be checked. If not and you still feel uneasy about it, go to the hospital and tell them what's going on. I've always heard and believe it's true, that a mother intuition, whether you be a knew mother or not, is always right. Good luck with your new baby! :d

You Are In Labor

Sounds like you are in labor. A woman can be in labor for up to two weeks. You don't have to be reeling in pain or consistently contracting and dilating to qualify for labor. Ask a midwife. Doctors won't confirm this beacause of insurance reasons. Don't worry your body knows what it is doing.
