Nasal polyps or tumors
Posted: 02-01-08 06:19am

I've had a little bit of discomfort inside my nostril for perhaps a few weeks, kind of like having a cold or some such, and today I finally went to look and it appears there's an exposed bone or perhaps some sort of tumor. Having examined it, it certainly seems to be living tissue. Um, it feels weird, like having a nosebleed, but there hasn't been any blood.

...what should I do? How does something like that happen? It's sort of frightening to me.

According to the your description, you could be experiencing a nasal polyp. Nasal polyps can be either a tumor or pseudo-tumor, according tot he nature of the polyp. Tumors are new-growth formations which are benign or malignant. Nasal tumors can originate from any tissue present in the nasal cavity: mucosa, glands, connective tissue, bone, blood vessels etc. The etiology of both benign and malignant tumors is unknown but it is important to know that, whatever factor caused it, a tumor will continue to grow even after the the disappearance of the original cause.

On the other hand, pseudo-tumors (false tumors) are due to chronic inflammation, usually caused by an allergy. Chronic inflammation provokes hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the mucosal structures and manifests with the growth of a mass that is called a "polyp". A polyp that is result of chronic inflammation doesn’t disappear but at least stops growing if and when the original inflammation vanishes. But the problem is that such chronic inflammations usually don’t vanish spontaneously.

Regradless of type, nasal polyps are treated with surgical removal. You can consult an ENT-specialist for more information about this and to schedule a follow-up appointment for diagnosis.
