lump in back of throat
Posted: 02-01-08 11:44am

About 2 weeks ago I developed abad headache which lasted for 3 days. On the 3rd day I became exhausted and all my joints ached I was so tired I felt like I couldnt hold my body up and couldnt even be bothered to breathe! I spent most of 1 day in bed. The following day I had cold like symptoms so I thought I was getting Flu but then i seemed to feel a bit better so discounted flu. Now 2 weeks on I still have a loose cough and need to blow my nose alot. My main questions concerns my throat. For about a week now Its fine all day but every evening my throat gets sore on the left side when I swallow and I feel shattered again. i have no swollen glands and my tonsils are normal but I have a small lump on the back of my throat slightly to the left it is hard to discribe but is not ulcer like nor is it similar to the white spots normally asscociated with sore throats. It more like a shiny boil or spot but does not look puss filled.
Does anyone have any ideas or do I have to go to the docs.
Thanks in advance

I'd suggest a visit to your primary doctor or an ENT specialist. You could be dealing with an infection here. In the meantime, maybe buy some of those throat lozenges with zinc...or honey. We have them where I live. They'e called strepsils. And there is one with an antibacterial in it. They really ease my sore throat.

Thanks for your reply. I will be visiting my doctor at the end of the week but its not always so easy as I live abroad and my doctor doesn't speak much english! I had cat scratch disease when I was 9 which resulted in an operation to remove a lump from my neck but I dont know what they removed! So I worry a bit about throat and neck issues.
I will let you know how I get on
Thanks again

Yes, please. Do be sure to ask for a range of bacterial infection examinations. Strep throat, and others ...

Well...... I did go to the docs but.......I didnt get round to him seing me as I was more concerned fo rmy daughter who has also been ill I have posted to 'ask the doctor' regarding her symptoms but I will paste it here to incase you have any ideas!?
I am now wondering if we have the same thing. So when I get her sorted I will ask him to check me out!
This is concerning my daughter (info given above for her) She has had large swollen glands on one side of her neck for 3 weeks and swollen sore tonsils. Saw Doctor twice given 2 diferent courses of antibiotics and anti inflamatories which had no effect. Saw specialist yesterday told to stop taking the anti inflam and was prescribed a course of sterods. To continue with the antibiotics. Rash appeared all over her face and body yesterday (before starting steroids) similar to measles.

consultation with ent speciaslist blood test results as follows: hemoglobin 11.3 g/dl hematocrite 35.4% lymphocytes 7294/mm3 monocytes 1042/mm3 S.G.O.T/A.S.A.T 110 UI/l S.G.P.T/A.L.A.T 251 UI/l gamma-glutamyl transferase 52 UI/l awaiting results for SERO EBV. Specialist said possibly glandular fever??

Steroids (solupred prednisolone) 3 20mg tablets every morning for 5 days then reduce by 1/2 a tablet per day.
Penicilin cefuroxime biogaran 250mg 1 morning 1 night

My doctor only speaks French and so an accurate understanding of the diagnosis is often difficult. I would like to know why the enzyme results so high and what can this indicate? Are these symptoms and blood test results typical of Glandular fever??
Thankyou
