Are kids nowadays more rude than they were in say 1980?

I get the feeling that the kids my
daughter goes to school with are
miscreants and most of them have been
downright cruel. Granted, these are
Kindergartners! I think the first time
anyone was ever outright nasty to me was
in the 5th grade. I also noticed that
when I was a preschool teacher, so many of
the kids were spiteful to their teacher.
We NEVER EVER mouthed off to a teacher
when we were in school-EVER! Kids are
doing it all the time now. What has
happened in the last 20 years to change
kids so much? Is it the commonplace
circumstance of the dual earner family?
Is it the earlier onset of full day
childcare? Or is it that children have
become overprogrammed and are just acting
out because they are held to such a high
standard by their parents all the time?
What do you thihnk?

Maybe. Parents are perhaps too lenient.
What age group specifically?

I honestly believe it's because parents
just don't want to teach their kids
obedience. We can't spank them any more,
it's too cruel and we'll go to jail for
it. We have to give them a time out (which
CAN work if you use it right IMO). I also
believe because we have younger mothers
that never got along with their mother
doesn't want their child to hate them, so
they let them do what they want, even if
it means mouthing off, hitting, etc. etc.
I honestly 'blame' the parents in this
situation. A kindergartner doesn't act
that way on instinct.

Oh they're definitely much ruder.
The thing that a couple of people have
touched upon is this:
A parent is a parent, NOT a friend. You
can be "friends" with your mom and dad,
but when it comes down to the grind, they
are disciplinarians and dictators. What
they say, goes. Period. That's not
something to be hated; that's how it's
supposed to be so that they can protect
their child!!
And yeah. Parents aren't allowed to punish
their own kids these days. It's sad.

I think it's also because schools don't
reprimand students like they used to.
There should be a zero tolerance rule for
swearing, bullying, fighting, etc. in
school.

Oh, but you can't "ostracize" or embarrass
the kid!! I'm sorry, but that's one of the
most powerful tools. Shame is extremely
powerful, moreso than a detention.

My fiancee ended up not getting his
diploma because he was
verbally/emotionally bullied. The
counselor said 'they couldn't do anything
about it'. Here's an idea, remember those
paddle with the holes in them? yea they
used to use those in schools, why take
them out? IMO.

Just a few words that I think are
relevant. Hip hop. Bling bling. Pimps,
ho's and tricks. Gangster (G's).
Commercialism. Marketing. Materialism.
The pornification of pop culture.
Commodification.
Are we thinking about what our kids are
watching/learning/being sold by the media
they are bombarded with daily?
We have to fight against these things to
instill real values in them.
Just something to ponder.
You can find me in the club, bottle full
of bub
Look mami I got the X if you into taking
drugs
I'm into having sex, I ain't into making
love
So come give me a hug if you into to
getting rubbed
I don't know if you got a man or not,
If you made plans or not
God put me in the plans or not
I'm trippin' this drink got me sayin' a
lot
But I know that God put you in front of
me
So how the hell could you front on me?
There's a thousand you's, there's only one
of me
I'm trippin', I'm caught up in the moment
right?
This is Louis Vuitton Don night
So we gonna do everything that Kan like
Heard they'd do anything for a Klondike
Well I'd do anything for a blonde-dike
And she'll do anything for the limelight
And we'll do anything when the time's
right

You know it's gotten out of hand when
vending machines in KFC fast food outlets
across Canada are found to have stickers
showing the trademarked Hello Kitty
character being kicked by another cat, who
is saying, "Pimp That Ho." KFC's owner,
Priszm, removed the machines from their
chicken joints nationwide after a parent
discovered the stickers in one shop and
then others, in Edmonton.
After running a "Pimp My Garden" contest
replete with cute "Black Hoe" references
from one reader, the Toronto Star got a
deserved earful from readers.
brandsonsale.com was marketing a variety
of adult and child pimp and ho costumes,
including a "child ho" costume. Now there
is a more generic costumes-for-sale page
at the company's site reflecting a
broadened product line; however using
their internal search engine, one finds
that they still sell adult pimp costumes,
adult ho costumes, kids pimp costumes, and
for post-ironic animal lovers, a pimp suit
dog costume. In a dazzling burst of moral
propriety, however, they seem to have
discontinued the "child ho" costume. Last
month, a national furor of sorts developed
after uber-blogger Matt Drudge rightly
outed a company named pimpfants, of
Portland, Oregon, with a simple picture
and link on his site titled "Ho Clothes
For Kiddies." Naturally, their server
crashed temporarily, but they're back up -
peddling the tasteful red with white trim
"Jr. Pimp Squad Basketball Set"; a black
with hot pink trim "Pimpfants Jersey T;"
and a green "'Bling' Velour Hoody Set" for
girls.
rap star Nelly was scheduled to appear on
the campus of Spelman College earlier this
month. The black women's college was
teaming up with 4Sho4Kids, a foundation
started by Nelly to increase awareness
about the need for more African-American
bone marrow donors. But as the date
approached, a group of students decided
that the rapper's latest video, Tip Drill,
was far too sexually explicit and
demeaning. The phrase "Tip-Drill" refers
to an ugly woman with a nice body, good
only for sex. In what some see as
reinforcing the stereotype of women as a
cash-and-carry commodity, Nelly is seen
swiping a credit card through a woman's
backside.

Any other cultural phenomenon
leading kids astray, killbill? *raised

"Kids these days!"
I think the "adult culture" (the ones
raising the kids) is trickling down, and
reflected in the yoots.

The anti-discipline brigade and
increasingly lazy parenting are creating a
new generation of scum. Kids these days
grow up entitlement minded and are never
taught social boundaries, manners or
responsibility. The few parents that try
to raise productive members of society are
restricted in what they can do because
people can't tell the difference between
swatting a brat on the behind and putting
them in the corner and punching a kid in
the eye and locking them in a dungeon.

I'd just like to add that nobody really
says "bling bling" anymore except people
who don't know that it's "over".
I don't agree with paddling in school. I
don't feel it's the teacher's right to
raise a hand/paddle/whatever and get
physical with a child. Having said that, I
do
think schools should be more strict with
punishment for swearing, bullying, and
other disruptive behavior.

Tell that to my 6 year old neice and her
classmates. She named her cat Blingbling.
They may not know that it's over but it
trickles down to them nonetheless.
Especially the kids who have young parents
who don't know any other culture besides
that one.

i actually think killbill made a good
point.
Society and television have a lot of
influence over our kids. don't say they
don't, we all know they do. From the time
they are toddlers and see a toy on TV that
they just HAVE to have, to being a teen
and seeing girls on shows like The Hills
dressing a certain way and just HAVING to
be like them. We're all influenced by
society. My cousins were pimps for
Halloween a few years ago.. and my aunt
thought it was *cute* and *funny*. I
thought it was wrong and disturbing. Why
let your children saunter around
representing something so demoralizing and
dirty? Would she have the same reaction if
they came home one day and actually WERE a
pimp or a hoe? I hope not. Its the same
thing. Allowing it is condoning it is
justifying it.
If people would get their heads out of
their asses and stop trying to be like
everyone else we wouldn't have such a
problem with influence ruining our
children.

Is TV a reflection of society, or is
society molded by TV?

i think its a little bit of both,
actually.
It seems its always going to about shock
factor.. trying to "one up" somebody to
make more money, or be more popular.

ill agree with the society being molded by
tv. I notice a lot of kids imitating what
they see there.
