very sore throat not improving on antibiotics Posted: 02-03-08 08:14am
Hello. I am a 20 year old male. So about
3 weeks ago I began to feel really crappy.
I had a fever, body aches, dizziness,
sinus headache, eyeball pain.... no cough
or sore throat though.
I went to the doctor and he was surprised
that my throat didnt hurt because my
tonsils were swollen and had those white
patches on them. He put me on some
antibiotics which didnt seem to do much.
My sinusses still hurt afterwards however
so I went back into the doctor and she
gave me some more antibiotics... my throat
still didnt hurt.
Then about 3 days into that course of
antibiotics my throat really began to hurt
badly. I went to see an ENT a couple days
ago and he gave me another antibiotic and
said that if this didnt work theyd
probably have to remove the tonsils.
Its going on like 3 days now and the
antibiotics dont seem to be helping the
sore throat at all. My glands are all
swollen and the entire right side of my
throat kills. Its red and just kills
especially when I swallow.
It seems odd to me that the antibiotics
arent working... could it be that I have
mono? They have never checked me for
it.... they never even swabbed my
throat.... they just started prescribing
antibiotics,
Should I go in and ask to be swabbed and
tested for mono? Do mono sore throats
hurt this bad? Does mono ever cause
bacterial sore throats instead of just
viral? How long does it take mono sore
throats to go away on their own?
Im kind of freaked out because if it is
bacterial then nothing is working and that
freaks me out. I dont want the tonsils
out, especially right now with school
starting up again.
Besides for the sore throat I have felt ok
recently. The fever that I had a week ago
seemed to go away, but this morning my
sore throat seems to be accompanied by a
sick feeling again. Throughout this
entire past like three weeks I have
definitely felt fatigued, tired, and
dizzy. I hear though that many people
with mono get a rash when they are
prescribed antibiotics and I have had no
such rash. Does that always happen?
