Skipping your period w/ birth control Posted: 02-05-08 10:30am
I have a question regarding the practice
of purposefully skipping menstrual periods
using birth control. I began to use
Yasmin 3 years ago to regulate my period,
but now my period is extremely regular and
I use it only for contraceptive purposes.
I skipped my period a couple years ago for
prom night by simply skipping over the
week of white "sugar pills" or "reminder
pills" and going straight to another pack
of yellow pills when I had finished the
first one. It worked; however, I
developed my very first yeast infection
soon after. I assume this was from the
increased levels of estrogen I had in my
body by not taking a "break" from the
yellow pills for one week. I also assumed
these increased levels of estrogen had led
my body to produce more Candida than
normal, giving me a yeast infection. So
here is my question: Is this a common side
effect of purposefully skipping your
period, or is this a safe thing to do? I
need to skip it again soon and I am
worried about it. Thank you.

A candida infection is an endogenous yeast
infection of the vagina. Candida normally
lives in the vagina but in some occasions
when the local immunity has decreased, the
yeast infection can cause inflammation.
Conditions that make the vagina more
susceptible to developing yeast infections
include: pregnancy, using large-spectral
antibiotics, taking oral contraceptives,
etc.
In your case, there is a great possibility
that the usage of oral contraceptives and
skipping the menstrual period has caused
yeast infection. Skipping a period can be
achieved if the estrogen levels in the
body are maintained at high levels.
Menstruation, in fact, occurs when the
estrogen level drops. Increased estrogen
levels for longer periods of time make the
vagina susceptible to developing yeast
infections.
I don’t recommend that you skip your
periods very often not only because of the
increased risk for yeast infections but
also because this practice promotes
irregular vaginal bleeding, which is not
advised.
