acidophilus and folic acid for BV
Posted: 02-07-08 00:40am

alright so i posted a question the other day about my BV. im just trying to figure out if my BV is improving and going away...

this is what i posted the other day.. in case you didnt get a chance to read it..
i was given Flagyl.. took it for the 1st 2 days but could not continue because of the side effects. I read online to take Acidophilus & Folic Acid & to douche with hydrogen peroxide/water. I did this and the terrible smell dissappeared. I got my period and after my period went away the strange discharge came back again.. but not smelling as bad as it did the 1st time.. i repeated the steps of acidophilus, folic acid and hydrogen peroxide/water and again the smell went away.. now the smell has been gone for like a week now.. there is NO smell AT ALL while having oral sex .. but when i sit all day in school and come home to go to the bathroom there is faint smell on my underwear.. (similar to the smell of elmers glue) is this normal? .. also the taste is very sour.
.......................................... ................
okay so now about 2 days after i posted that... i continued to take 1 acidophilus pill and 1 folic acid pill a day... still NO smell during oral.. only a slight smell when its on my underwear. the discharge doesnt look thick like a paste anymore.. its more liquid-like & the color is cloudy clearish white. normal? the taste isnt sour anymore either. now its just VERY salty. normal? could my BV nightmare finally be going away?

yikes... don't douche with peroxide!! That's terrible! Even if you do kill the bacterial infection, you might cause a yeast infection and also irritation in the vagina, which could lead to more infection, etc. Don't do it!!

If the smell is only a slight smell when you try to smell it, it's probably normal. Cloudy white discharge is also normal. So yes, (yay!!) it does sound like the BV is going away.

I just suggest you stop using products at all on your vagina, wash it wish just water or a very gentle ph balanced soap every day, and wear cotton underwear, wipe from front to back, etc. It sounds like you'll be fine.

i know i said the smell is "slight" but it's still more noticable then it ever was b4.. i cant smell it thru my cloths like i did when my BV was really bad.. but its still there .. & i notice it.. so it annoys me.

and a lot of ppl say you CAN ONLY cure BV with an antibiotic .. & i wasn't able to take the antibiotic.. so is it really possible that its just going away on its own?
i stopped using the Dove soap i used, cuz i heard that was bad. i drink a lot of water. i've been wiping the right way i dont wear underwear to bed.. is that a good idea or bad idea? not sure about the cotton underwear tho.. i think a lot of my underwear has like a cotton lining? not sure tho.

Well you did take the flagyl right? Because even if you didn't take it all, it could've been enough to kill it off (along with behavioral things). How long was the course (how long were you supposed to take it?)

It's a good idea not to wear underwear to bed for women prone to infections- because bacteria and yeast like to hide in warm, moist places, if you aren't wearing underwear or wearing cotton underwear (and not thongs!) there is more airflow and the whole area stays more dry. Not using soap is important too- but that will be a lot more important for preventing yeast infections, not necessarily bacterial infections.

It sounds like you're doing the right things, and it sounds like it's getting better, or it is better. Definitely wait a while before you have any unprotected sex (because you two can pass it back and forth). Most women have a slight odor if they try to smell it- that is normal. It could just be that you're noticing it more now simply because you're paying more attention to everything "down there." Can you smell it, unclothed, standing up? If so, it might still be a problem. If not, you're probably fine.

So the only other thing I'm wondering is why you weren't able to take all the antibiotics? I've never taken flagyl- is it oral or a suppository? You don't really have to answer that, I'm just curious.

you are supposed to take flagyl twice a day for seven days... i only took the twice a day for 2 days. The side effects to the pill were terrible. the mettalic taste in my mouth was so bad i didn't even want to eat. it was making me very moody. i was very depressed and very angry. im never like this.. so i linked it to the Flagyl because those are common side affects to the antibiotic. I read online that the side effects were only to get worse thru the course of the 7 days. nausea, vommiting, fatique, diarrhea, stomach cramping, strong mettalic taste etc. so i chose not to take it anymore because i couldnt imagine anything worse then how i felt after only 4 dosages. also the pill itself TASTED SO BAD! the last one i took disolved in my mouth b4 i swallowed it. OMG im gagging just thinking about the taste. after i swallowed the pill the taste lasted on my tounge for a good 10 minutes. it was terrible.
