Breastfeeding Woes...
Posted: 02-07-08 11:53am

So, Nya's been officially breastfeeding since 5.30 this morning!! yes
She had one 30/40 min feeding and wasn't satisfied, so she took a lil more than half an ounce of formula to help her out.

Well, I just fed her at 9.45/10 and she's knocked out.

The only worry I have is she's not sucking like she used to. She's sort of gnawing. Not painfully, but it's not a traditional suck.

She's doing like a mixture of sucking and gnawing. I'm massaging my breasts as she feeds to empty them and help with produciton.

If her sucking doesn't get better, I"m going to call the Lactation Nurse to see if I can meet with her for some tips.

Keep yalls fingers crossed fo rme please!!

Or vaseline if your nipples get sore. Maybe its because your still giving her formula in a bottle too so shes getting mixed up, I'd stop that immediately if poss, but yeah good idea to call them!

I hope it gets better for you. We have a little nipple confusion too even though we're using the playtex like you are. We do most of our breastfeeding at night though and supplement if we're out during the day. I hope she perks up and remembers how to suck like she used to. I'm sure the more you guys do it the easier it will get.

Nipple confusion can and does happen when you introduce another nipple (IE bottle, pacifier) before breast feeding has become established. Anytime in the first month of breast feeding that you bring in alternate nipples, it can confuse an infant.

You can never find a nipple that will be like a breast nipple. Even a low flow nipple will still flow with more ease than it takes to get milk out of your breast. Once a baby knows that breast feeding is hard work, they want to easy work. It is human nature to take the easy path. Smile

Limit the use (or stop altogether!) of other nipples and the confusion will stop.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the tips ladies!!

I'll feed her from my breast, and if it's not enough (after about 40mins), I'll give her an ounce of formula. (just until my milk supply increases).

At first I was WAAY bummed about having to supplement. But I figure SOME breast milk is better than NONE, right?

Each feeding is getting better and better. She does a WHOLE lot better when she's swaddled!

If it doesn't get better by tomorrow, I'm calling the lactation nurse!!

Keep having her suck on your breast. The only way to get the milk supply to increase is to have them suckle (or pump). Supply and demand. Your breasts are smart enough to make as much as that baby demands. It may take a few days - but it all works out. If you continue giving bottles, Nya suckles less. If Nya suckles less, you make less milk. If you make less milk, you'll supplement more.

It is a vicious cycle that you are trying to avoid.

exactly. I don't give her the bottle until she's completely sucked my boobs dry!! I'll try to hand express to make SURE they're empty, before I offer her the bottle.

I'm sooo glad she's allowed to feed again. Pumping doesn't have the same effect as her sucking.

Thank GOD for swaddling! It calms her down sooo much to get her to focus on my boob rather than spazzing out!!

Good work on your breastfeeding!

Another good thing to do is just have a nude day with Nya.Skin to skin contact is excellent when establishing your supply.Everytime she makes a squeek pop her bare skin on your bare skin and let her suck, suck, suck.

I've been breastfeeding for 8 months and found my supply was dropping over the last couple of weeks because of some hard core dieting and excersise. But I devoted a whole day to just letting Montanah eat when ever she cried, naked, and my supply quickly built itself back up.

Babies are pretty amazing little creatures, they know what they need to do to get the milk supply up and running, thats why they like to suck all the time,it brings the milk in!
