Withrawl After Pump Removal Posted: 02-08-08 03:10am
On Jan 3rd, I had emergency surgery to
remove the morhine pump that I have had
since 1996. I was given morphine by mouth
to take but I was unable to take it
morphine by mouth.
So I wear Fenyanyl Patches and take
Oxycodone by mouth.
Here is the problem. It is Over A Month,
and I am still going through withdrawal!
The minute the oral oxycodone starts to
wear off, I am back in withdrawl including
restless legs, bone aches, sweats and
chills, etc !
I have searched the internet and I have
read that normal (for oral morphine) the
withdrawl shoud not last this long. Why am
I still in withdrawal and when will it
ever end?

Withdrawal can last up to a week from a
pump, but the long term hypersensitization
due to NMDA receptor activation can last
much longer. The NMDA receptors are pain
producing receptors in the spine and brain
that are turned on when they come into
contact with narcotic drugs. They cause
central pain with global aching all over.
When a person has been on a much higher
dose equivalency of morphine via a pump,
withdrawal from the morphine can also
active the NMDA receptors. Your doctor
can prescribe drugs such as klonopin +
clonidine that can help with these
symptoms...

So why did you have the pump removed. I
see you said it was an emergency but did
you not have it replaced? And if not,
what's the deal? I assume you are still in
pain so take the oxycodone and mellow out,
by golly! I am currently on oxycodone sop
I know EXACTLY how it feels - BUT - I am
not silly enough to miss a dose... dang,
that's just asking for it!!!
