Wish I could help......I don't think it's
something to be too concerned about, or
your doc would have told you. Try to
stay positive

Only your doctor (with access to the ultra
sound results) can offer
an expert opinion.
However, common causes of the problem
include a blockage between the kidney and
bladder or valve that is not functioning
correctly.
I want tell you not to worry, because as a
parent that is impossible. But your
doctor most probably told you not to worry
as conditions causing an enlarged kidney
often correct themselves.

Hi nicole
i had a scan last week and have been told
exactly the same thing. I am expecting a
little boy and he has enlarged kidneys.
I have to go back for another scan at 36
weeks and was told not to worry!!
Impossible!
I have been searching internet for
"enlarged kidneys" and thats how I came
across your posting.
The guy that did my scan did say that it
occurred in 3% of pregnancies (he'd only
ever come across it happening in boys) and
that its due to a valve not being matured
properly yet - but hopefully by the time
we are scanned again the valve will have
matured and the problem will have
rectified itself. Apparently it nearly
always does rectify itself before the baby
is born.
If it doesnt for some reason then they
will scan baby once it is born and
apparently it is then more susceptible to
infections etc. But im not sure whether
or not it is anything more serious than
that, or what they do about it - he didnt
go into that - didnt want to panic me I
dont think! (too late for that!)
i have been reading up on everything about
kidneys and in one book it did say
something about if left untreated it could
lead to kidney failure but to be honest I
wasnt even sure I was reading up on the
same thing as I do not know technical name
for "enlarged kidney" and I was reading up
about fluid on kidney - so dont panic yet.
When is your due date and when do you get
your next scan?
I know exactly how you are feeling and you
cant help but worry - I am thinking about
it all of the time. I will continue my
search for info and let you know if I find
anything else out.
Sam

Nicole,
i was told at 15 weeks gestation that my
son's kidney was enlarged and had several
ultrasounds throughout the pregnancy to
track it. At the last ultrasound, about
two weeks before he was born, they thought
it looked fine. Yesterday, at 3 weeks
old, (born 3 weeks early) he went for
another ultrasound. His doctor called
this morning to say that it was still
enlarged and that they are sending him in
2 weeks for a bcug (basically, an x-ray of
his bladder). I am currently researching
this to find out what else could be going
on. He seems to be very healthy,
content, and happy. Having been there, I
know that it is hard not to worry, but try
not to stress too much (it's not good for
the baby). I will let you know if I find
anything in my research and how the test
goes.
Good luck!

Thanks alot for all your info guys. Im
due in 10 weeks, august 23rd. I go in
for another ultrasound on the 29th of june
to see what is going on. I try not to
worry about it and as long as I can feel
his movement I seem to be fine. But its
always in the back of my mind. I will
keep you updated on his progress and let
you know if I have any new info that will
help. Thanks again, very much
appreciated.

Hi nicole im also due on the 23rd of aug
and my son was also diagnosed with a
enlarged kidney. I have done some reading
and as long as there arent any cysts thats
good. The baby might just have a blockage
which is not something we want but it sure
is a lot more relieving. My next
appointment with the perinatologist
(ultrasound level 2) is the 23rd of june,
on my last visit he recomended I speak to
a pediatric urologist just to get more
info and in case I need one after the baby
is born. I have to be honest at first I
was devastated I thought the worst after
reading thru the internet about certain
types of kidney situations, but there are
so many I didnt know if it pertained to
me. The doctor told me that he didnt see
any cysts and I thank god. They examined
every little inch of my son and hes just
holding more fluid in one kidney than the
other. So dont worry to much its not good
for the baby, I know you cant help it but
try, just think everytime he gives you a
kick it because he wants you to know hes
just fine.

I just found out today that my baby which
is also a boy has an enlarged kidney. I
have another ultrasound july 20 and I am
due september 22.
Did they tell you the millimeter it was
enlarged by? They told me that normal
was 4 and my son was 5. I feel better
reading all the information given. I am
scared too. I am also curious on other
doctors opinions.

Hi dcj,
im having a home birth so I had to go to a
specialist and he said that usually they
dont get concerned if the kidney is
smaller than 10 mm my son was at 12 when
we first went there, but last week the
ultrasound tech said he went from 1.8 to
2.O which now that you mention it is a bit
confusing. And the specialist who I saw
or the doctor didnt see me this time
around and I asked if he needed to, only
the tech examined me so I assumed
everything is going good I dont think they
would let anything slip thru the crack.
But you know I feel good about everything
I have a good feeling. I will certainly
ask the next time whats normal and we can
swap notes.

Well I went for my 32 week ultrasound to
determine if my babies kidney has gone
back to normal size. And it hasnt. It
is 1cm enlarged and the doctor told me not
to worry. She plans on doing an
ultrasound on him after he is born. Im
scared that something is terribly wrong
and now have nightmares. 7 or so more
weeks to go until I know for sure that my
baby will come into this world safe and
sound. How am I 'not' suppost to worry?
All I can do is try.

Enlarged Kidney

I have also just found out at 23 weeks
pregnant that my baby boy has an enlarged
kidney. I too have been told to come back
at 32 weeks for another scan to see what
has happened to it. I feel so helpless as
9 weeks seems like ages away and i'm so
scared that my baby could die by then, or
at the very least that he could be in
terrible pain. The person who did the
scan was pretty unhelpful and just said
that sometimes these things do put
themselves right. Having read up more on
the subject it seems that if the kidney is
still enlarged at 32 weeks they bring you
back at 36 weeks and if it's still worse
then they might induce an early labour so
they can try to treat the kidney as
there's obviously nothing they can do
while the baby's still inside you. I
suppose the only thing we can be grateful
for is that a human can live with just one
kidney, so hopefully our babies will make
it even if one of their kidneys doesn't.
I am deperate to find out more on this
subject, does anyone have further news on
their own situation or has found out any
more information that could be useful to
us all? Is anyone aware of anything that
we as mothers should do or not do to make
the situation better eg things we should
or shouldn't eat which might make it
worse? Good luck to everyone in the same
situation, fingers crossed that our babies
will all be ok in the end.
Jane

Relax Please!!

I am 49 & found out at 18 that my
right kidney was huge (explained all thise
growing pains (that's what the drs said
they were!!) but I have no left kidney -
which is why my right one grew larger -
& I only found out by accident!! Also
for the record i'm a female!! But in the
dark ages when I was born they didn't have
ultrasounds etc etc so mother's didn't
know that there was any sort of problem
& so they didn't worry.
Worry & stress is probably far more
likely to hurt your babies than an
enlarged kidney. The size of the kidney
may reduce narurally or the baby may need
some (probably) minor corrective surgery.
But please give yur baby every chance by
trying to relax - I have 2 children I lost
2 before my daughter, 2 after her &
then I lost my sons twin - so I do know
that relaxing is easier to say than do but
I also speak from experience both as a
mother & as someone who had a kidney
problem whilst in utero (just no-one knew
till 18 years later!!).
