if changing his formula doesn't help (because it could just be constipation from the formula), try changing his bottles.
williams had loads of problems with his pooping. he was constipated on sma gold when he was a newborn and also had colic. he had colic until i changed his bottles and he grew out of it eventually. with the constipation, i changed his milk to a special cow and gate. it got rid of the constipation, but gave him severe diarhhoa. every fart was a stinky poo! after a few months of that, we changed his milk to regular cow and gate and he was fine with that and we had regular poos lol. but when he was a year, we put him on growing up milk, which made him have diarrhoa again, so we put him back on foruma. still no change. we put him on regular cows milk and he was fine with that. hes been on that since. health visitors warn you about changing babies milk so be careful.

yeah, I'll definitely try that... I'm hoping that just changing the formula will work though... I feel SO bad for Alex... My mom needs to hurry up with going to the store though. Alex will be waking up for his next bottle within the next hour..

try and calm down. that might be making things worse. babies can tell when you're upset, stressed, etc

Do you really believe he is crying for no reason at all?

Why aren't you asking your mother for help?

Sometimes he does cry for NO reason.. I can tell when he's trying to poop..

I don't want to ask my mom for help if I don't HAVE to... Alex is my responsibility not hers.. I want to try to figure things out on my own before I go to her.

Well in the case of the hard stools and painful pooping, you did figure it out. You needed your mother to go get you the new formula.

What kind did she get?

I hope that helps him. Try to keep yourself calm, which isn't easy when you have a baby that is screaming. They can sense if you are tense and that makes them cry more.

We are all here for you if you need help. We've all been there and we've all made our mistakes.

Thanks, I hope it help too.

I try to stay calm. My mom told me if I get TO frustrated to just put Alex down and let him cry for a minuet to calm myself down...

Thank you. All you ladies are so great Smile

What you're describing sounds like gas, not colic. Colic isn't usually relieved by laying no the stomach. Colic is actually just a broad term used to describe any period of uncontrollable, inexplicable crying.

Have you felt his tummy? I read both threads and didn't see mention of this. If his stomach is hard, you need to flush out the system. The method I used (although I am not a doctor, just a mother with three difficult children so call your doc or nurse friend before doing this) was 1 oz of prune juice with 3 oz water. When my children became gassy and constipated, they'd receive no formula until their stomach was soft again. I strongly suggest, as I did before, to take the time to devote to breastfeeding rather than going to the prune juice route. Also use frequent belly massages and warm soaks in a baby tub, along with leg-to-belly pushes to help along his digestive track.

Colic:
Colic is a common problem, affecting 10-25% of all newborns. It is defined as recurrent inconsolable crying in a healthy and well-fed infant. It usually begins at about two to three weeks of age, is at its worst at six weeks of age and then gradually improves and finally resolves on its own by three to four months.
The most common symptoms of colic are the sudden onset of screaming and crying that can last for more than two to three hours at a time. Babies with colic will often seem as if they are in pain and are difficult to console. While crying they will usually pass a lot of gas, draw up their legs and their abdomen may seem hard or distended.
Most babies with colic have one or two episodes of this type of crying each day. In between these episodes they usually act fine.
It is not known what causes colic, but it is not usually thought to be from abdominal pain, formula allergies, the iron in infant formula or gas. It is known that normal babies have a fussy period toward the end of the day that begins when they are two to three weeks old and that this may be their way of ‘blowing off steam' or dealing with the normal stimulus of their day. It may be that babies with colic are more sensitive to this normal everyday stimulation. It is also known that babies with colic do not have more difficult temperaments and are not more hypersensitive as they grow older
Unless your baby has reflux or a formula allergy, there are no medicines to make colic go away. Some tips to help deal with colic until it clears up on its own include:
Reassure yourself and other family members that this is a benign problem that always clears up on its own without any long term effects.
Some things that you may try to comfort your baby include:
swaddling
cuddling
rhythmic rocking
going for a walk or ride
warm baths
singing
rhythmic sounds
massages
using a pacifier, windup swing or vibrating chair.
None of these measures work for all children, but you can try one or two at a time until you find what works for your baby.
If nothing works, it is okay to just put your baby down and let him cry for short periods. Always remember that it wasn't anything that you did or didn't do that caused your baby to have colic and as a last resort try to take a break by having a family member or friend help care for your baby.

constipation:
Constipation in a newborn can be a sign that your baby isn't getting enough to eat. If your new baby is not having frequent bowel movements, be sure to discuss with your Pediatrician your baby's feeding schedule, amount of wet diapers and if he seems to be gaining weight.
After your baby is born, he will pass meconium for a few days, which is a dark green or black substance. Regular bowel movements, which begin being lighter than meconium, usually start by about the third day of life. At this time, bowel movements also become more frequent, especially for breastfeeding mothers. If your baby isn't having regular bowel movements by the fourth or fifth day of life, or if he is still passing meconium, then that may be a sign that he isn't getting enough to eat
Constipation is defined as the passage of hard, pellet-like stools that cause pain or bleeding (groaning or straining is normal) and not so much by how often your baby has a bowel movement. Keep in mind that some breast fed babies only have one bowel movement each week or two after they are 3-4 weeks old. Breastfed babies are very rarely constipated if you are exclusively breastfeeding.
Initial treatment for constipation is by giving 2-4 ounces of water or diluted prune juice once or twice a day or by changing to a soy based formula if you are using formula
