constipation:
It's important to watch your newborn closely for signs of constipation, as without care the situation can worsen.

The first few days of life, your infant will pass meconium, a greenish black substance that accumulated in its intestines during gestation. After this stage, your newborn's bowel movements will sometimes change color and consistency; this is usually a sign that all is working normally. The consistency will normally be watery and loose.

Symptoms of Constipation
Hard, pellet-like stool accompanied with groaning and straining means your newborn is constipated. There's some good news for mothers who exclusively breastfeed their babies-exclusively breastfed newborns rarely get constipated!

Treatment for Newborn Constipation
You can easily treat your newborn's constipation by offering him about four ounces of diluted prune juice. Prune juice, because it is a sugary liquid, will draw water into the stomach. This will soften stools and make it easier for your baby to pass stool.

Awww hun it does get frustrating but you have to stay calm for Alex. Newborn babies do cry a lot..colic, constipation, just for the heck of it...they do. It's good that you got him different formula. I had to put Dallas on Isomil because the similac advance made him poop to much.

Also, I was reading your other post that got locked and I saw you had him on powder? This may be weird but he could have a reaction to the powder. Dallas did, it made him sick. Maybe try a can where you add the water to it. If the switching formula doesn't help.

You should make a WIC appt. they will give you 31 can a month for Alex. It really does help a lot.

PM me hun. I'll help you and not be mean towards you like some are.

HTH!

I'm sorry I'm so late on this thread! I"ve been SO busy!!

I don't think it's colic, as he calmed down when on his belly. It's prob gas or cramping from needing to poop!

Oni & Nya have always been on Soy formula.

It's not true that newborns cry a lot. Nya doesn't make a peep unless she's hungry. So, it's got to be something else besides he's just crying, ya know?

I really hope the change of formula works for him. Try massaging his belly if it's hard!

yeah, before the other night Alex NEVER cried unless he was hungry or needed to be changed.

The change in formula is slowly working. He doesn't cry as much when he's on his back if at all... He still wants to be put to bed on his stomach. My mom think that's because he's congested.. My sister came to the hospital sick to see Alex, Now i'm sick and I think Alex is getting sick too...

I'm try massaging his belly and see if that help... I'll also try continuing to give him a little water in between feedings...

Definately get him to the Dr. I know you have an appt tomorrow, mabe see if you can move the time to in the morning.

A congested newborn is NOT a good thing. And SHAME on your sister for coming see yall being sick!!!!

Make a list tonight of EVERYTHING you want to tell the Dr! Cuz I promise you'll forget to mention SOMETHING if you don't! LOL!

Just be sure to massage him a lot. It takes a lot of work to get a baby's slow bowels chugging along. My second daughter was constipated all the time it seemed! I used to sit for hours with her in warm water, massing her stomach and working her legs.

You CAN withhold formula for a few hours, which I would suggest doing if his belly is hard. He won't starve without a bottle for 4-8 hours. He'll be crabby, but the outcome should be a better feeling tummy afterwards. Ideally, he shouldn't receive formula until his belly is soft and he has passed gas and had a powerful bowel movement (from what you're describing, that's what my spidey-sense tells me will happen)

thanks guys..

I'll call in the morning and see if there is ANY possible way to get him in sooner but they are always PACKED.

Altari, I was told NOT to put Alex in a baby tub until his cord falls out..which should be ANY time now....

I have been massaging his tummy and working his legs...

I feel really bad if I do that though.. When he's hungry I feed him.. He normally has about 4 hours in between feedings anyways...we fell asleep at like 5 and he just got up for a bottle.. But maybe I can try to hold out a little longer on giving him a bottle next time since he JUST ate.. He is CONSTANTLY passing gas he just has the hard time pooping... but i'll keep up what i'm doing because it seems to be helping.. A LOT.
