Flank pain

Gosh... this has been going on for a long time. Started with pain & fatigue. That was diagnosed as fibromyalgia. Then other symptoms--flushing in the face and ringing in my ears. Found out I have hypertension (& I'm only 32). Been coughing for a few weeks. At first, it was off and on; now it's getting more frequent and more severe. A few days ago, I discovered a lump on my neck. My chiropractor said my glands were very swollen, especially the one on the right, which explained why I felt a lump. Over the next couple of days, I've had pain and swelling of all the other glands. In some places, it's visible. I stay tired all the time. Also, I keep having this pain where my spleen is. When it happens, it's sharp and makes me have to double over and my breathing is shallow, but labored. It hurts to inhale when I'm having that pain. Also, being bipolar, most just think I want attention or am just being paranoid. Well, paranoia can't cause you to have a low-grade fever for about 3 months.

So, I think I have some ideas, but would like the opinions of others. I will see a doctor this week. I think it's either (or a combination of) chronic fatigue syndrome, mononucleosis, and/or pneumonia. Also, I'm always getting sudden headaches. It may have to do with the fact that I have a herniated disc in my neck (C4-C5), but I am not sure.

What scares me is I'm always feeling like something's really wrong--like something the doctors won't find or won't look for, and it will eventually kill me. I was at supper tonight when I had one of those stabbing pains and my left arm went numb. I thought I was having a heart attack--or was about to, but my husband just rolled his eyes. I swear, one day I'm going to drop dead because everyone thinks I'm overreacting.

Low grade fever IS the most worrying symptom. I'd suggest that you request lab diagnostics to check for a while range of infections that manifest your symptoms. Mononucleosis is one, but be sure to ask your GP about others.

This sounds like an infection of some sort. It explains the low-grade fever, the swollen glands, AND the swollen spleen... That's just your immune system amping up to fight off whatever's in your body that shouldn't be.

And -- while I'm certainly NOT saying that this is all in your head, because I know how frustrating that is -- anxiety (like the kind you're experiencing over your health) can cause numbness/tingling in the extremities. That happened to me a few times, and each time I thought I was having a stroke!

BUT, this is all stuff that should be checked by a doctor regardless. Even if it IS just an infection, only a doctor can take care of that.

Good luck.

Found out what was wrong.

A day or two after this post, I was sent to the hospital with chest pain and shortness of breath. The good news it that nothing major was wrong. What was actually going on is kinda funny.

I have a very bad back. I found out when I was at the chiropractors a few days after my ER visit, that my back was out of alignment in such a way that it affected a rib or two. It was angled in just enough to cause pain and put enough pressure on my lung that I had shortness of breath and that heart attack-type feeling. The constant low-grade temp could be from any number of things like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue. My spleen wasn't swollen as I had suspected from the pain. Also, the swollen glands had gone down quite a bit by the time I was sent to the ER. My GP thinks I may have been exposed to something and was just fighting it off. He doubts they were all swollen. Much of the pain I was experiencing was from a combination of fibromyalgia and a herniated disc in my neck.

Very strange. Very strange...

Fibromyalgia and a herniated disc --- are you satisfied with this possible diagnosis?

yes, because...

I was diagnosed with a herniated disc over a year ago. I have the MRI to prove it. They will not operate unless it ruptures or causes so much pain that my lifestyle is severely impacted.

From a rheumatologist, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia last year after many, many tests to rule out more serious conditions first. When she tested the different areas for pain (the typical test for fibro) I scored a positive on everything.

It was my chiropractor that figured out the rib thing. He said he could feel it in my spine and it's happened to him before.

Since I got that part fixed, my problems are within the realm of fibro and disc stuff. I'm sure those are the correct diagnoses unless the fibro is actually chronic fatigue, but they are very similar. Oh, and I had my blood pressure medication changed, too. That's helped with several other strange symptoms.
