Could I be Bipolar? If not what could it be?

I'm 16 year old female. I know regular teenagers don't have regular sleep patterns but mine seem a bit extreme. I go to sleep between 12am-5am. I don't miss my sleep very much and when I do I just fall asleep when I get home from school for an hour and it's perfectly fine. My body is already exhausted from other chemical imbalances. My period is like a train wreck. It hurts so badly I cry and I can't concentrate during my classes. I get headaches that practically knock me out, on a daily basis. I get in irrational arguments with my closest friends over small misunderstandings. I have uncontrollable body pains. Neck, hip, back, legs and shoulders. I've seen physical therapist, specialists, and doctors of who knows what. I've had ultrasounds, bone scans, MRIs, and X-rays. I've had dozens of diagnoses, nothing has come up with any improvement. It's all just getting worse. I'm paranoid and when something is said between one of me and my friends I can look at it completely out of context and blow it up to who knows what. It's just in the last year that this has been happening. Once I figure it out I feel foolish and I can tell, even if they don't think I can, that they are confused and freaked out. I can spend a day happy and pretty okay but the next thing I know I'm crumpled on the floor crying. Goodness knows why... Or it can be the other way around, I'm angry and depressed and then I'm okay and smiling. I really just... Don't know what to think. So I came here. So anyone... Help?

Do your parents know about your periods being so irregular? This can be due to an endocrine imbalance. That can really effect your moods and overall feeling of well being. You do describe swings in your moods. Whether this is due to bipolar disorder is difficult to say. You need to see a psychiatrist that can diagnose you. You may want to see an endocrinologist to rule out a hormonal imbalance. Talk to your parents. You should seek medical help and get to the bottom of this. It is miserable to live with uncertainty and feeling out of control of your moods. Let us know how you do!

Yes my parents do know of this issue. I am on the pill and have been for months. No change.

I would talk to your parents and see an endocrinologist. They can do blood work to check hormonal balance. Unfortunately in medicine the way things work is that you rule out possible causes for symptoms. The endocrinologist is a jumping point. You need to start somewhere. As a nurse, this is where I would go first. I hope this was helpful. All the best.

I agree with both of you posts actually. Although, it almost sounds like Bipolar mixed with some stress. And I also agree that medication can cause some of thes factors. I do know that stress can cause irregular periods at any set time. Been through that myself. Was on every antidepressent med you can think of in the 80s before I was diagnosed bipolar. And I still was in denial. 30 years later I am out of the closet and on Lamectal.
Good advice!
