Fasting
Posted: 05-02-04 15:39pm

I am thinking of going for 10 days without food cos I read that it will eat away all your true fat. Does anyone know how much weight can be lost during this time? I believe I can do it cos when I am determined nothing can stop me. I am only going to drink (diet) coke and water (of course).

This is what I read "contrary to what many people believe, fasting is not starvation. During the fast, the body is breaking down the non-essential tissue (fat) for energy. While conserving essential tissue. Starvation, is the point where the body has used up all of its non-essential tissues (reserves) ,and begins to break down its own essential tissues. This point (the point of starvation), even for the average individual (of normal weight), takes quite some time to reach (some 42 days or more)."

I have read that fasting is very healthy if you do it occasionally and only for 2-3 days. If you go longer than that, you will only cause damage.
If you want to lose weight and are that determined. Try atkins. It really works. And you will be able to eat.
But whatever you decide, do not fast for more than 2-3 days.

Hayley
i am in school to become a nutriotionist and psychologist. I can honestly tell you that going on a fast and using it to an extreme, is not a good idea. People who are religious fast- for a couple days at a time. Yes the human body can go a while without eating food and drinking pleanty of water, but like I have said before your metabolism slows down, and sooner or later you wil have to eat, you can't live on water forever, and when you do guaranteed some of the water weight you lost will come right on and pretty quick too, since your body will want to hang on to every bit of food it gets from having been deprived. I really dont want to gove you diet advice since I dont know if it will help or harm but I feel you need to know another way other than this- I know you don't eat meat, so you should try the south beach diet- it's low carb and you substitue animal protein for vegetable protein- which you need to presevre your muscle. You should eat 4-5-6 meals a day spaced out, this speeds up your metabolism and you will actually lose weight quicker than you would starving yourself orrrr fasting.- and whats inmportant it would be healthy. You should atleast allow yourself 1200 at the very *least . When I was eating vegetarian I ate 1200 cal/ a day - not really meaning too becasue I had no weght to lose- but what meat I did have on me came off, pretttty fast, plus I was an excercise freak like you, so i'm sure it'd come off just as fast for you. Just know theres other ways that are healthy.

Well I guess if you do not eat meat then atkins would not work! Laughing sorry!
Zilbucks....Is it not true that it is healthy to fast for two to three days? I have read quite a bit about it and some doctors actually recommend it. Is that not right? Seriously I am just asking to be sure.

i've fasted for a *few days- yes it is ok- it cleanses the body of toxins, if you drink mainly water. But definetly not a good plan in doing it to an extreme. People have been known to do fasts for 40 days, and live and be fine- the problem is in hayleys case she's doing it to lose weight. Her metabolism will slow down and store whatever nutrients it has, and what it can't get it will take from her- like protein - it will take and eat away from her muscle, as soon is she is done fasting and introduces food , it will go back on (the weight not necessarily the muscle) a fast in the form of a short detox is fine

Yeah, I saw that you said above "to the extreme" but you didn't say anything about whether or not it was "o.K" to do it for just a couple of days. That is just what I was wondering. Thank you for clarifying.
I have read that it is good for detoxing your body, and I have never heard of it being good for weight loss.
Thanks.

I agree. Fasting for 10 days wont do any good. Only harm. Its not safe at all. Of effective for weight loss. After fasting, you do starve your body, and end up putting the weight back on much quicker.
