Itchy eustachian tube!
Posted: 02-11-08 11:41am

Has anyone ever had an itch in their eustachian tubes before? These are the tubes that connect from your throat/nose to your inner ear and aid in "popping" them when you change altitudes. Well, sometimes, mine itch!! It's really annoying because it's not like it can itch them, they're inside my skull!!

Do you experience frequent colds or allergies?

With colds and allergies membranes in the nose can swell and might block the opening to the Eustachian tube, resulting in the stuffy-ear feeling. Or, an ENT can more precisely help you.

If the Eustachian tube is blocked you can gently blow out while pinching your nose and closing your lips, a procedure called Valsalva's manoeuvre. The normal finding is that the eardrum moves slightly during it. When the Eustachian tube is blocked, the eardrum remains still....so maybe go get this checked out?

No, I'm hardly ever sick...

I can voluntarily pop my ears without having to plug my nose to do it; I can even choose which ear to pop; I have a lot of control over it!

And it's not a stuffy feeling... I can hear well and pop my ears just fine. It just feels like there's a hair wiggling inside of my head from my eardrum to the back of my throat.

Itch is a mild form of inflamation so i would do some steaming and decongesting and if that doesn't shift it, see the doc! I am very, very au fait with eustachian tube trials and tribulations!

Lol. The itches go away in a few minutes and only happen every few months or so, so I don't think it's anything to go to a doctor for.

Ah, okay - but I recognise that itchy feeling and it usually presages a cold! (Don't say I didn't warn you!)

Maybe try to clean your sinuses? Maybe there IS a little hair or particle in there! Running saline solution from one nostril to the other might help?

How would I do that lol? And it's not my sinuses that itch when this happens... Like I said, it usually only lasts for a few minutes. It doesn't itch right now.

Itchy Eustachian Tube
Posted: 03-07-08 17:38pm

I get an Itchy Eustachian Tube and what works for me is:

-plug nose & keep mouth closed and push air out - pop ears; and

-close mouth and make sure your throat is closed, then tilt head back and pour Nasal Saline Solution up your nose, shake head a bit, and bring head back down and blow your nose into a kleenex.

Keep cleaning your nasal passages out this way and you'll see that soon the itch will be gone. Whatever bacteria got lodged in there will be flushed out.

Some people, their Eustachian Tube won't drain properly and then bacteria can grow, causing the tube to become quite itchy. Keep it flushed out! Saline Solution disinfects.

Good Luck!!

Well a tube will begin to itch after I pop my ears too much, actually. I can voluntarily pop my ears usually. Right now isn't a good time as I've developed a sinus infection lol! Not due to popping my ears too much; it's just that season.

itchy ear, nose, throat - allergies
Posted: 06-16-08 10:16am

Have had this problem all my life. I'm 65. It is allergies, no doubt. I've tried everything from Claritin to prescription drugs.

But I've finally found something that relieves the problem. I purchased a neti-pot and use it daily and particularly when the itching gets bad. Alleviates the itch for a long time, even in the ear.

Try it. Not only does it relieve the itching, it also eases the problem for long periods of time.

Good luck and good health.
