diabetes complications and bleeding gastric ulcer Posted: 02-12-08 16:00pm
Hi it's Robert. My mother recently passed
away from a bleeding gastric ulcer or
peptic ulcer. She has had diabetes for a
couple of years now and her medication and
all doctor visits were done religiously by
my father. She previously had high blood
pressure (3 years ago ) and collapsed in
the house and was taken to the hospital
and found she no longer had high blood
pressure but diabetes instead. She
exercised on a stationary bike for 10
minutes a day. She seemed healthy. Here is
my question: She had a renal exam at 10:00
in the morning, had something to eat and
then went to the mall and then returned
home. 10 minutes later she complained of a
bad chest pain. We took her to the
hospital and then she was taken by
ambulance to a larger facility the next
day. This turned out to be angina. She
stayed there for a week. They reworked her
medication and added the nitropatch to
relieve symptoms. When released from this
hospital we went to a restaurant where she
fell and broke her shoulder. My dad was
helping her walk in the restaurant but she
slipped and dragged him down also. He was
okay. She broke her shoulder. We had our
family doctor check her out and said it
was a clavicle break. They could not
operate because of her weak heart and
angina and diabetes. The doctor checked
her out completely and put a sling on it
and she returned home with us. We nursed
her as best we could with medication,
drinking lots of water and putting on the
patch every day. She did not exercise
while she was at home after the shoulder
break. After a few days we checked her
shoulder and noticed a large bruise ( but
no hematoma ). Size of bruise was 3X6
inches roughly. Purple green and yellow.
She also had a bruise on her abdomen but
that could of been from her stay in the
hospital ( Lower abdomen on her right side
( Same side as clavicle fracture ). She
was going to the bathroom quite a bit and
i tried to help her as much as possible.
Drinking lots of fluids. Blood glucose
levels were checked every day. The doctor
told us she was a very sick lady. A few
days after returning home her appetite
decreased a little bit and she was tired
alot of the time. We did not get the
bruise checked on her shoulder or abdomen
( 1 1/2 inches high by 4 inches wide )
This could of been done in the hospital
and not from the fall ). 8 days after she
returned home she slumped over against the
vanity while on the toilet but did not
fall down in the bathroom. We helped her
back to the couch where she didn't seem to
bad. Her speech and faculties were fine
but she complained of a sore stomach. We
phoned the doctor and he told us to bring
her in in 3 hours. 2 hours later we took
here to the bathroom to get ready for the
doctor and this time she passed out. I was
very scared and immediately took her to
the emergency room. Doctor showed up in a
few minutes. All of her testing was done.
Vitals looked good. Pulse was 75. I think
she was dka. THe nurse checked her blood
glucose and it was 26. They revived her
and 20 minutes later she in the ambulance
to the larger hospital. The doctor came
out and told us of a gastric ulcer or
peptic ulcer that was bleeding ( artery
clip was needed ) and she needed immediate
medical attention in ICU which was 3 hours
away. The doctor said she was very sick
with all of her medical problems. With the
broken shoulder the doctor said her heart
was not strong enough for an operation.
Could she of got an infection from the
clavicle break. On the X-ray it showed a
clean break with no protrusion thru the
skin. She also had problems with
swallowing fluid in the last year. I knew
this bleeding gastric ulcer was serious.
We were phoned 2 days later to come up to
see her where she had passed away. She
also had a heart attack while there. Could
i have done anything different with proper
exercise for her the last couple of years.
How did she get the ulcer. With all of
these medical problems how many years
would she have left if the ulcer problem
did not come up. Please help. Robert.
