headaches and fear of fainting Posted: 02-14-08 15:34pm
so i was just diagnosed with panic attacks
although i've had them for about 4
months.
i was wondering if anyone else gets
headaches too? i have them all day, every
day. the headaches get ten times worse
after i have an attack though.
i also have a fear of fainting and hate to
see people pass out, which is really bad
for my career, dealing with athletes.
are the panic attacks and fear of fainting
related? with treatment knock them both
out hopefully?

Yes, they are related in the sense that
panic attacks can lead to phobias and vice
versa. I also have a fear of fainting,
unconsciousness, anaesthetic and even
sleep as to me they are all a form of
'death'! I have lived with this and other
phobias most of my life. I know when and
why it started and that helps gain some
control over it. However, I can still
have a full blown panic attack as soon as
I begin to feel light-headed!
As for the headaches - I imagine that is a
tension headache although it just might be
an unrelated symptom (eg TMJ? teeth
grinding in sleep etc?)
But please be assured that the panic
attacks will lessen in time as they did
for me - I only have one every couple of
years now!

Agreed- definitely related!
Headaches, though, can be caused by so
many things. Dehydration (do you drink
enough water?) Lack of nutrition (have you
had your iron level checked, do you eat
enough?) Grinding teeth (when you sleep,
when you drive, when you watch TV), not
getting enough sleep, tons of other
causes. And after a panic attack, your
breathing pattern was probably messed up,
which is probably what caused another
headache.
Treatment can definitely knock out panic
attacks and fear of fainting, cbt is
always a good bet, but a good psychologist
who has dealt with anxiety issues before
will know just what to do.
If your headaches don't go away, it's a
good idea to check in with a gp.

I also am terrified of fainting, but my
fear started because I actually started
passing out. I have had about 9 faiting
spells in the last 4 years and they happen
pretty randomly and there doesn't seem to
be any rhyme or reason to explain why they
happened and the dr's dont know why
either. So now the fear is constant that
the next attack is going to happen, so I
have constant anxiety and any time I am
away from home for alone for a long period
of time I get extremly panicked. But I
too have the fear of being unconnscious or
anything that reminds me of death. I feel
bad all the time, with headaches, ear
pain, sore throats, sore hands and jaw
pain. And I don't know if these are all
symptoms of my panic.
