what to expect from support group Posted: 02-15-08 15:01pm
hello again,
I was thinking about going to a support
group for those dealing with illnesses
like ours... but I was just wondering what
I should expect. I'm a rather social
person, so I'm not too scared... I went to
an NA meeting once to support a friend...
but i don't think it will be too much like
that.. should i bring my boyfriend?
thanks

Bipolar support groups are enormously
beneficial for bipolar sufferers and their
families.
If you are newly diagnosed, the support
group will provide you with informations
to educate yourself about bipolar
disorder. That will be very helpful,
because a lack of knowledge can only lead
you to unfounded fears and apprehension.
You'll probably, get advices how to cope
with the symptoms at daily basis, what to
except from a new drug treatment and how
to get to well adjusted life.
Bringing your boyfriend is a great idea.
It will be much easier for him to
understand your problem and he'll learn
the best way to be supportive. There are,
also, support groups that are specifically
aimed at the family and friends of bipolar
disorder patients.

I agree with MandMs. Support groups are a
great way to interact with those who
suffer as we do. You will get a great deal
of support and even make friends most
likely. At least you know your no alone.
This is a real hassel to have to go
through. Especially when you have a crash.
You will learn more how to deal with it.
The best of luck!

I was diagnosed in Oct of 2002 so I'm not
really looking for any new information,
just people to talk to. I love my
therapist...we have a great bond since i
was her first patient... it's just that
she isn't bipolar... you know?
thanks

You are welcome.
Being around people with same problem will
be relaxing since you''ll get the feeling
that you aren't alone and you are truly
understand.

Would be good for the boyfriend too- so he
can meet other people in his situation and
know that he isn't alone, and just to
learn.
