How to clean a wound
Posted: 02-18-08 05:06am

The incident occurred about two weeks ago. My friends and I were camping for the weekend, and were in the middle of a hike. At one point, I quit paying attention tripped over a branch. I had banged up both shins, and had what appeared to be a rug burn, a little larger than a quarter of skin had rubbed off and started to bleed. After cleaning it up, I was fine. However, fast forward to today, the wound is still there. I am getting concerned about infection (due to lack of insurance). Currently it is slightly swollen and red surrounding the wound, has a few yellowish/brownish patches within, but no genital wasn't worried about it before because it didn't hurt, however it has been getting cleaned out very well every night with alcohol or hot water and salt. I was wondering if my description sounds like an infection, and if so, what methods can I use to ensure that it is taken care of. I can clarify if needed, but I am concerned. Thank you.

If after 2 weeks a wound is still open and not yet covered with a scabbing crust .... and swelling and redness around the wound is present, you could be experiencing some type of minor wound infection. You can try using Iodine solution to perform a wound toilette and clean the area because iodine is more efficient against bacteria than alcohol. You can also apply an antibiotic spray to the wound and if the symptoms persist, go see your family physician.
