Thyroid tests Posted: 02-19-08 00:44am
My medical records from the past show that
I had low tsh. When I was young, the
doctor told my parents to bring me to an
endocrinologist but they never did. I have
had my thyroid checked once a year for the
last 3 years. I was told it was normal. If
the tsh shows normal, is that a solid test
you can rely on? I have heard that other
tests can be performed in regards to T3 or
T4. Is it necessary to perform these other
tests if the person's tsh shows normal?

No one single laboratory test is 100%
accurate in diagnosing all types of
thyroid disease; however, a combination of
two or more tests can usually detect even
the slightest abnormality of thyroid
function. So, it'll be good to be checked
for T3 and T4 hormone levels.
For example, you can have not elevated TSH
levels, but low T4 hormone level.
