Nexium dosage and AR
Posted: 02-21-08 23:23pm

I am on Nexium 40mg in the morning and have been for over a year now. Lately I am finding that I am having some episodes after I go to bed at night. Woke up this eveing with chest pain and sure enough, started belching and then the acid started coming up my throat. I took another Nexium ( I know, I usually take a prilosec, but was out) and a Klopoin for anxiety. Feels much better now. Actually gone. But I was just wondering if anyone else maybe had to have their dose altered or time change for this reason. I will call my doctor in the morning for sure. Well she give me an extra dose? I know you supposed to take it in the morning before your first meal.

Thanks in advance,
Carrie

For many people, just one pill a day of NEXIUM can mean complete 24-hour relief from heartburn symptoms, but these results may vary.
You need to talk with your doctor for its effectiveness, and, you mustn't change the dosage by yourself.
Maybe, you'll need to take antacids (stomach acid neutralizers) along with this medication.
Do you usually have a big meal before going to bed?

Hi MandMs, nope. No big meal before bedtime. As a matter of fact I am going to the doctor today for a different reason and I am going to ask her. I really know not to double up myself, but it was so bad I had nothing else to take.
I think I might be coming down with something. Sore thoat, sneezing, slight cough. I can afford to be sick and would need to be on an anitboitic so I can have my surgery on the 3rd. So, I would rather play it safe and have her check me out.

According to one study, nearly three-quarters of patients with frequent GERD symptoms experience them at night. These patients complain of more severe pain than those whose symptoms occur at other times.
To avoid heartburn at night, try to elevate the head of the bed (using gravity to keep stomach acids from backing up)
Thinking of you for today's surgery!
All best to you!

I believe I am having AR in the middle of the night.

I am currently taking Nexium in the AM for reflux. I have been waking up in the early morning with major discomfort of pain under my breastbone and abdomen. Sometimes I feel as though I may blow up. No matter how I lay, I am in terrible pain. I have gotten up and taken liquid Maalox but to no avail, it doesn't help. The pain radiats through to my spine and at times my stomach is making terrible noises. I had an endoscopy which showed some inflammation of the esophagus and the upper part of my stomach looked as if someone had put acid on it. Biopsy's came back ok.

Sometimes I think I am going crazy as I don't think the Doc is understanding me. It is as if someone has raked my innerds. This is a nightly occurrence and frankly it is driving me crazy. I am at the point of tears and don't know what else to do or to tell the Doc.

Try to sleep with your head and shoulders elevated and on your left side.
Wait at least two to three hours after eating to go to bed and chew gum before bed (chewing gum can provide short-term heartburn relief by stimulating the production of saliva, which dilutes and neutralize stomach acid)

Thanks for the info. Never thought of chewing gum before bed. Makes sense to me. I will give it a go.

Put a few textbooks under your bed to put it at an incline. I know it's oldschool, but it really helped me when I had a hiatal hernia (in fact, if it hurts for you to press on the top, center of your abdomen where it meets your ribs, you might want to see if you have one, too). Also, gaviscon does wonders if you take it before bed. It tastes a little funny, but it creates a sort of foamy plug at the bottom of the esophagus that prevents any acid from coming up.
