I had bronchitis which has cleared up
(still has a bit of a cough), but still
has a lot of mucus in my nose. My one ear
got blocked a week ago and the other one
got blocked yesterday as well. It is very
annoying as my hearing is greatly
affected. I would like to know if this
medication will actually help to unblock
my ears and how long should it take?
Please advice.

YOU WROTE: List of other diseases,
conditions, or injuries and their
treatment: Had a deodenul ulcer 6 years
ago, but that has cleared up. Get
occasional hay-fever. When pregnant -
suffered from varicose veins
Diagnosis that has been suggested: Blocked
ears due to tubes between ears and nose
congested.
Current medical status: Congested sinuses,
blocked ears - had an ear examination
Immune system is low as I get every
ailment that my 9 month old baby gets....
Current medical treatment: To use a
anti-histamine (Fexo 180mg) 1x day for ten
days + Drixine nasal spray 3 x day for 5
days. Also use ACC 200 - 3x a day
Your ears will be blocked as long
congestion of the Eustachian tube is
present. Congestion is usually due to
inflammation of the nose, sinuses and
upper throat. Inflammation is usually
caused by infection (mostly viral
infections). In some people, allergies can
be also present and cause inflammation and
congestion of the ears. In these cases,
antihystamines are used to calm the
allergy. Furthermore, Drixine
(metazolinum) is a decongestive drug.
Drixine reduces mucous swelling. An ACC
200 (acetylcysteine) is a secretolytic
drug that decreases the nasal mucus’s
viscosity and makes it easier for
expelling. All these medication are
helpful.
In cases of a viral infection, symptoms
last for about a week. But if a bacterial
infection is present, treatment is longer
(2 weeks) and requires antibiotics.
Bacterial sinusitis is usually treated
with large-spectral antibiotics such as
ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin+clavulanic
acid, etc. Proper antibiotics can be
chosen and prescribed to you according to
an antibiogram, or the result of a
laboratory test to identify sensitivity of
an isolated bacterial strain to different
antibiotics. You can consult an ENT
specialist about this condition for more
information and follow up.
