Sphincterotomy fissure
Posted: 02-25-08 08:06am

Hi, since I had my baby almost 9 months ago I had pain going to the Bth. I went to see the MD and he gave me some cream for 6 weeks but after that and eating healthy foods, it did not help to heal the fissure.

He recommended me to have a Sphincterotomy which is a procedure performed to treat anal fissures. An anal fissure is a split in the lining of the rectum, possibly resulting from a hard bowel movement. Muscle spasms and subsequent bowel movements prevent healing. Fissures can be encouraged to heal using topical medications and stool softeners, but severe or recurring fissures may require a sphincterectomy.

During a sphincterotomy, the outermost part of the anal sphincter is cut. This weakens the muscle and relieves the muscle spasms which prevents healing. As with any surgery, there are risks such as bleeding, infection, or an adverse reaction to anesthesia. There is also the possibility of an abscess or fistula formation, or the inability to control gas and bowel movements.

I am asking if anyone has gone thru this and what your outcome was. Do you recommend it? I am afraid of the post-surgery effects, and since there is no tunr back I don't want to make the 'solution' something worse than the problem...

Please help!!! Sad

I was say dont do it. I have problems with uncontrollable flatus, i would never even endanger myself to such a surgery. If that is a possibility you reallllly want to try other alternatives.
