Another post got me thinking ADD/ADHD

who all has it and how do you cope with
it?
I have ADD and it is sooo frustrating but
i do not take meds for it but im trying
hard to stay on task when i do something

I take what is prescribed to me. I have
appointments with a child psychologist as
we try to figure out something that will
work for me.
Medication always works in the beginning,
but stops being effective after a period
of time. I've changed medications 7 times
since I was 9.

It really does suck. People hear about
ritalin and think that it's a magic
focuser that solves everything, but it
really, really isn't. The only thing
medication (right now, 72mg of Concerta)
does for me now is slow down my speech (I
talk incredibly fast), supress my
appetite, and keep me from sleeping.

I heard that some women used to take
ritalin to give them energy and some
became addicted. I also heard that is a
really harsh drug for youngsters. I really
feel bad for you...I pray my son doesn't
have to deal with these illnesses.

When I was younger, I really had no
problem with it other than the fact that I
never ate, so I was always small for my
age, and I never slept, which just wasn't
fun.
Ritalin addiction is really common among
college students who get it illegally. I
could make a fortune selling my pills. But
I don't.
EDIT: I also consider myself lucky to not
have as severe a case as others do. I'm
also thankful that I don't have a learning
disability on top of the ADHD, because
that makes things even more difficult.

I was the runt of the class; so incredibly
small.
It's a double-edged sword. A lot of the
kids who have ADHD are small. They are
prescribed a stimulant and it often
decreases their appetite. Yet, the
stimulants really helps some of them in
school. It's just so difficult.
Have you tried any of the more stimulating
antidepressants such as Welbutrin or
Effexor? Have you considered Strattera?
Just curious. They usually don't as well
as the stimulants but do have great
success for certain individuals.
The biggest problem with individuals who
have ADHD and are not treated, is that
they try to self medicate. If they truly
need medication, then addiction to ritalin
isn't really a problem because it is what
they need. It is not supposed to give you
more energy if you have ADHD.

Strattera was an absolute joke. I was
seriously better off unmedicated.
I started on straight Ritalin, then
Concerta, then Straterra, then Concerta
again, then Adderall, then some sort of
ritalin patch for about 3 weeks, then
Focalin, then Concerta again.
Adderall worked, but it raised my resting
heartrate to the 120s and made me a
complete b-witch when I came down off of
it.
It doesn't give me energy, so to speak,
but it's still a stimulant and will keep
me up no matter how tired I am.

Brian has ADHD/ODD and is a ticking time
bomb at times. He's very emotional, and
that is a double-edge sword.

Teachers had been saying since preschool
that I always talked out of turn, never
raised my hand, couldn't sit still in
class, etc, so my parents had me
evaluated.

Funny and alot of parents and teachers
would just call that an insubordinate
child. I think my nephew has it too
because he can't concentrate whatsoever!

because i work in a youth organisation
there are a good few of them with ADHD and
jeez its like running a zoo. i seem to be
the only one who can keep there attention
on the one thing though. to be honest ADHD
would be alot helped better if more people
knew how to deal with it.
i supose im also just a big kid at heart
and let them all run about and let off
some steam

he is 10 but he has had this issue at
shcool since kindergarten. He forgets his
books , he learns something new and 10
minutes later he forgets. it so diffiuclt
to help him with his homework. I told my
sister to get him evaluated.

That's another thing! I'm super-forgetful
because I can't get a thought from point A
to point B without pitstopping at point Q,
and generally never arriving at point B! I
now have an extra set of textbooks that
stay at school, and another set that stays
at home, which is so insanely helpful.
