okay so i'm 25 weeks and 2 days along and
here recently the reality is really
starting to kick in that i'm really doing
this. I've had several people tell me that
i'll be okay, but others are not so
convincing. I have several worries...First
off I hate needles. I almost have panic
attacks even when they have to take my
blood. I get through it, but i am scared
about it. I don't deal with pain very
well, in my opinion. I have been in no
real big pain in my whole life. I've never
broken a bone or been punched in the face
or nothing lol. I have, however, had 2
root canals, and a wisdom tooth removed
and will be getting another root canal and
wisdom tooth removed within a month. That
hurt, but it was just uncomfortable to me
not painful. The wisdom tooth extraction
really was unconfortable because i never
take medication because i didn't like the
way the meds made me feel. I've been told
a few times by women that they would
rather have a baby then have a tooth
ache....That seems strange to me Also I have not
been able to completely quit smoking
throughout my pregnancy and i'm scared my
baby will be deformed or something. The
doctor says everything looks great and the
baby is growing like it should be, but i'm
a worrier. I blame my mother for this lol
I'm scared of almost everything unknown. I
need some reassurance that i can do this.
I compare labor in my head to be told i'm
dying! I cannot take pain i don't think.
any suggestions?

I AM HAVING MY SIXTH BABY! Posted: 02-28-08 19:33pm
Let me tell you. The needle that you are
referring to is an IV. These are a lot
better than actually having your blood
drawn in my opinion. Its were they place
it that is discouraging. The hand is a
very tender area. But the whole purpose of
the hand instead of the arm is so that you
are able to move it. Otherwise it would be
tied to a board. I too have anxiety about
giving birth. It does not get any easier
the more you have. First off, I am
allergic to pain meds. So no epideral,
demerol or codeine for me. SO i have no
choice but to deliver "naturally". You on
the other hand may be able to tolerate
them. So relax. There is no need to worry
about it just yet. Go to your book store
and read up on all the delivery books you
can possibly find. The more information
you have the more confident you will feel
about yourself. You can never have too
much knowledge and preparation for the BIG
day. I do get anxiety attacks after they
insert the IV. I then almost pass out and
i have to have juice. Then I am shaking
throughout my delivery for being so
nervous. The pain is unbearable. You will
never feel this kind of pain again. Its
something that I cannot describe to you
other than every woman will go through it.
But I tell you what, once that baby is
laying on your stomach the pain
disappears. INSTANTLY! THen you are very
proud of yourself. I would not emphasze so
much on how bad the pain is, but more on
what can i do to remain healthy for me and
my baby. Meaning your bad habit of smoking
. After all the
pain of delivering your baby you dont want
anything complicated after wards. No
ultrasound is 100%. Only seeing the baby
after birth will determine if there is or
will be issues later. If you feel that
when you are in labor and you just can't
go on, then you can always get pain meds
to numb you. I on the other hand. Can not.
So no matter what anyone tells you, you do
have pain choices and they will be there
if you need them.

Honey, don't worry so much. Worring will
only make it worse on you. The fact is it
will hurt. But I can tell you it's not
intollerable. Plus you HAVE to get an iv
anyway and that's easy access to pain
meds. I am deathly affraid of someone
sticking a needle in my spine, so for me
an epi is out of the question. With my
first labor when the pain got too much I
asked for some demerol. It works pretty
well, made me a little sick but thats just
the way I am with drugs. Do some research
though, there are some new meds they use
now that don't effect you or the baby too
mcuh. Just wait a few weeks and you'll be
begging for labor. The labor part is
usually only one day or a few hours the
last month of pregnancy is an eternity.
Personally I'd go through labor 20 more
times if I never had to be pregnancy
again.

don't stress hun. labour is not as bad as
it sounds. heck, you forget about it
afterwards. alot of ladies dont even need
pain relief during labour as its bearable.
its natural for women to give birth.
if you are scared of needles, you don't
need to have any. keep an open mind on
what you want during labour as you may
change your mind. i was dead scared of
needles before, yet i opted for pethidine
( a small injection in the back).
good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
enjoy every minute of it because it goes
fast!

The IV isnt the most pleasant feeling.
Just turn your head and dont watch think
about your baby and take a deep breath!
Then its over just like that no BIG deal.
Also contractions are different with every
women. Mine were pretty rough I didnt find
that breathing the certain ways helped all
that much. Anyway I didnt really want to
have an epidural because of, well the
thought of a needle going through my back
but when the time came I couldnt handle
the pain anymore so i wanted NOW!!! I was
terrifed let me tell ya, my heart rate
went through the roof when they were
fixing to do it and od course I paniced
over nothing all it feels like is a bee
sting and then the pain goes away in about
10- 15 minutes then everything was great
just waited untill he arrived!
