Small non-obstructing kidney stones
Posted: 02-28-08 23:15pm

Hi Everyone,

I'm 48 year old and I have several small kidney stones. Every couple of weeks I get these awful pains. The pain is mainly in the upper abdominal area which radiates a little to the back. I had a Cat scan and an x-ray done and it shows very small non-obstructing stones. The urologist say that he does not think that my pain is coming from these stones because they are not obstructing and they are very small. My question is if is not stones than what could it be? The pain it very intense that at one time I had to call the ambulance. Does anyone going through my similar experience? I would like to hear from anyone out there....Thanks

Hi mommy2008

For the life of me I will never understand why doctors say small stones don't cause pain.
They can and do. Everyone's pain level is different.
Stones are painful little buggers. I posted in another thread about this.
Imagine a straw as your ureter tube now picture a little pebble with pieces of glass on it trying to get through that straw. This is what the stone is trying to do.
Also when the stone is moving in the kidney and/or bladder it is bouncing around in there poking you with the jagged edges. So it will cause pain.
I could scream every time I hear this. I'd like to know how many of these doctors actually passed a stone.
I've had and still get stones of many sizes, some I pass with little pain others forget I'm cured up in awful pain.
Over time these stones can get bigger if you don't pass them. Most stones are from calcium oxalate. If you are not happy with your doctor can you go to another one?

Do you drink a lot of coffee, tea, colas? Eat chocolate?
There are other foods that can add in the development of stones, also heredity plays a factor.

The other thing is with stones people get renal colic, spasms within the kidney. This can occur with or without stones. They are very similar to muscle spasms but in the kidney, ureters and bladder.
Drink plenty of fluids and moving around (walking) can help get the stones to pass.
Some people suggest lemon juice and water. There's a lot of different remedies people try.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

As butterfly6169 writes there is renal colic which does cause pain. I haven't been diagnosed with stones, but I did have an obstruction. It was painful. I had to go to a urologist to be diagnosed. I hope you feel better soon, too. Smile

I have had kidney stones for about 20 years now. Ihave had stents, lithropsy also.
I am glad to hear that someone feels like me as says that small non abstructing stones don't hurt. They do hurt very much and when they are in the kidney and bouncing around they cause they renal colic. They hurt just as bad as if you where going to pass one. I get stones about every 2 months and some pass , others just stay in the kidney. I think it is hard on my kidneys as my right kidney is not functioning and my left is functioning at 24%.

Thank you for asking! Right now I am on different high blood pressure meds and they aren't working. The swithed me as I was in the hospital twice in the last month. The first time I went in I had chest pains. So then they gave me a stress test and I failed. So they did an angiogram on my heart. Which turned out ok. Thank god! But since I have had the angiogram I have been having pain in the groin and bladder. They can't tell me what it is as they have done 3 cat scans that should something but they said it was probably just nothing. So now I have this pain and they don't know what to do. Doctors drive me crazy! The secound time I was in the hospital I went in for a blood clott in the arm and with my chronic kidney failure the dye that they used for the angiogram mad my kidneys gets worse. The New Neph doctor wanted me to be put on different meds for high blood pressure. Now I am all out of wack. I have to sit still for my blood pressure to stay some what normal. When I move aroung I feel like my heart is going to explode and I am all shacky. My pusle has been running 99 to 135 . Which my normal is 63. My blood pressure is 154/98. I can't stand how I feel. I feel all out of breath. Plus I also have pulmenary problems and I am only 41. I have restriction in the airways.
Well you ask if you could do anything just listeneing is great. I will listen you if you like as well as I know how it can be.

Hi Heartly
I am so sorry to hear about your recent hospitalizations and health issues.
Doctors drive me crazy also. The dye is very dangerous even for people without kidney problems. Are you taking anything for the rapid heartbeat?
Did they give you a diagnosis of tachycardia?
Do you see a pulmonary doctor also? The pain in the groin sounds related to the angiogram, maybe a nerve was hit during the procedure.
Have the doctors ever mentioned doing a kidney biopsy?
I've been through a lot also. Feel free to pm anytime.
