Weird Covulsions In the First Stages of Sleep??? Posted: 09-15-03 18:18pm
Male - 25 years old
for about the last 6 years I have been
experiencing what I would describe as
strange convulsions while I fall to sleep.
They dont happen everyday maybe 3 or 4
times a week. But they always seem to
occur in the very first stage of sleep,
right as feel myself falling into sleep.
When they occur I am in a semi-conscious
state but am unable to control any of my
body as it shakes uncontrollably. The
shaking is not violent and not even
firghtnening. The strange part about them
is I can snap out of them and wake up at
will. Initially I have to admit they were
frightnening, but over time ive learned
that they are harmless and sometimes even
challenge myself to see how long I could
last in them. Usually after I wake from
the convulsions I fall asleep
uneventfully. The only other symptoms I
can describe after waking up from these
convulsion fits is a rapid heart beat. If
anybody knows what this might be or what
is causing this please respond. Like I
said ive never experienced any negative
effects from these convulsions but I would
like to know if they can be dangerous.
Thanks!

My Boyfriend Does the Same Thing Posted: 09-24-03 22:09pm
Hey...My boyfriend does the same exact
thing..The only difference is that he
doesnt know it. If im snuggling under his
arm...He will tap his hand and forearm on
my shoulder. He has no idea that he does
it. His whole body like jumps maybe 2 or
3 times. This is almost every night! His
mother does it too. She is 41. I dont
really think that it causes any bad
affects on the body. Neither of them have
gone to the doctor for it. I wouldnt
think you have anything to worry about.
Its just your muscles and nerves
contracting. I
hope this helps! You're not alone!!

Are you on any kind of medication by
chance?
I do this sometimes I take dialantin for
seizures, my wife tells me that I jerk but
I don't know I am doing it. I
have no abnormal side effects from it that
I can tell.
Hope the best for you!!!

This just happend to me last night for the
first time, I was aware I was shaking but
it seemed that I couldn't control my body
very well, and couldn't make it stop.
Finally I took really deep breaths and it
stopped. It happend again later that
night, but when I started breathing heavy
again, it stopped. It was really scary at
the time, something like that has never
happend before, and they only thing
different from normal that I can think of
was, I had not slept very much in the last
few days. Other than that, i'm not on any
medication or have any disorders (that I'm
aware of)
