Finding Out the Sex of the Baby Posted: 05-15-04 03:05am
Anybody know when they usually tell you
the sex? Pregnancy-week-by-week.Net says
external genitalia begin forming around 10
weeks. Can you actually see it then? Or
do you have to wait until later?

The baby is still small at 10weeks I know
when they did my second ultrasound I was
18weeks and they could have been able to
tell if my baby would have cooperated. I
dont know the exact weeks though

I think around the 15th or 16th week they
can start to tell... I had one at 19
weeks, and my baby was all curled up so I
couldnt find out, I get to wait til may
25th to see if I can find out now...

It depends on the doctor but I was told at
16 weeks and we could see it very clear
but some would even try til 18 weeks.

They can tell as early as 14 weeks in some
cases, however since the baby is much
smaller and the genitalia is still forming
they prefer to wait because little girls,
almost look like they have a penis in the
beginning, so the accuracy is much lower.
Most doctors prefer to wait until at least
16 weeks, but favor more towards 18-19
weeks, provided the baby cooperates with
them. The beginning and very end of
pregnancies always seem to drag on, but
once you get to about 16 weeks along, you
start to form a belly, find out the gender
in some cases, everything speeds up. Just
slow down patience is the key in
pregnancy.

One time I found an artical about
determining the sex and they had done a
study and they could tell as early as 11
weeks but I think it was only like 60%
accurate but by 12-13 weeks it was nearly
100%. Ill try to find it again so you can
read it.

I found these old wives tales. Here
are my experiences with them:
if your left breast is bigger than the
right during pregnancy, you're having a
girl. If the right is bigger, it'll be
a boy. If they are the same size,
you're in for a surprise! a
boy!
if you get moody during pregnancy you are
more likely to have a girl. This is
because all women are moody, and when
carrying a girl you become doubly so.
a
boy!
if you carry the baby out front (others
can’t see your pregnancy from behind) then
you will have a boy. If others can tell
that you are pregnant when looking at you
from behind, then you will have a girl.
not
showing yet.
have the mum-to-be pick up a key. If
she picks it up by the round end, it will
be a boy. If she picks it up by the
long end, it will be a girl. Should she
pick it up at the middle, twins are on the
way. a
girl.
if the mother's age at conception and the
year of conception are both even or both
odd, the baby is a girl. If one is even
and one is odd, the baby is a boy.
a
girl.
ask the mum-to-be to pick a number.
Match the number with the corresponding
letter of the alphabet (a=1, b=2 etc).
Then ask her to choose a name beginning
with that letter. If she chooses a boys
name, it will be a boy. If she chooses
a girls name, it will be a girl.
a
boy.
hang a gold pendant (preferably one the
mother wears often) over the palm of the
mother’s hand. If the pendant moves in
a circular motion, it will be a girl.
If it swings back and forth, a boy is on
the way. a
boy.
if you suffer from acne during pregnancy,
you will have a girl. a
girl.
what side does the mum-to-be lay on while
she's resting? If she lies on her left,
it's a boy; on her right, it's a girl.
a
girl.
if young boys (pre-school age) show
interest in you while you're pregnant, it
will be a girl. If they ignore you,
expect a boy. haven't
been around any pre-school age
boys.
ask the mum-to-be to show you her hands.
If she shows them palms up, it's a girl;
palms down, a boy. girl.
if you dream of girls, you will have a
boy. If you dream of boys, you will
have a girl. i dream
about a boy, so a girl.
if you crave sweets, a girl. If you
crave salts, a boy. a
boy.
there's reddish highlights in my hair:
it's a boy. yep. A
boy.
mothers feet are no colder than usual:
it's a girl. Colder? A boy. a
boy.
if you're carrying your baby high, it's a
girl. If you're carrying your baby low,
it's a boy. not
showing yet.
if the baby is very active, you're having
a boy. baby not
big enough to move yet!
if the baby's heartrate is less than 140,
a boy. If greater than 140, a
girl. a
boy!
Well, good luck. I know you are so
anxious to know what you are having but
just be patient! He or she will let you
know soon enough! Lol
love,
chanda

I Found This... Posted: 05-17-04 01:27am
There is a disparity in the age and
quality of some of the ultrasound
equipment, as well as a difference in the
experience level of technicians, which
makes it difficult to accurately state one
gestational age at which ultrasound can
always detect fetal gender. Some of the
reports in the literature are misleading
because they use study protocols, which
make use of the best and latest devices.
Even though studies are now reporting 100
percent accuracy in determining fetal
gender between 11 to 16 weeks of
gestation, in the average clinic
situation, fetal gender identification is
often not undertaken until at least 16
weeks, and is often not reliable until 20
to 24 weeks -- and this is when the baby
cooperates fully!
In a study by whitlow, published in
ultrasound in obstetrics & gynecology,
a sample of 524 women underwent a detailed
assessment of fetal anatomy at 11 to 14
weeks of gestation by means of
transabdominal sonography and transvaginal
sonography (26 percent). Fetal gender was
identified and was confirmed at birth.
The overall success of correctly assigning
fetal gender increased with gestational
age. At 11 weeks predictions were correct
46 percent of the time, at 12 weeks 75
percent, at 13 weeks 79 percent and at 14
weeks a 90 percent success rate was
reached.
An article by efrat in the same volume
(ultrasound in obstetrics &
gynecology,may 1999,) assessed the
accuracy of fetal sex determination at 11
to 14 weeks of gestation in 172 singleton
pregnancies. The accuracy of sex
determination increased with gestation
from 70 percent at 11 weeks, to over 98
percent at 12 weeks and 100 percent at 13
weeks. Male fetuses were wrongly assigned
as female in 56 percent of cases at 11
weeks, 3 percent at 12 weeks and 0 percent
at 13 weeks. In contrast, only 5 percent
of the female fetuses at 11 weeks were
incorrectly assigned as male and this
false-positive rate was 0 percent at 12
and 13 weeks.
Mazza, in the same volume, demonstrated
that when the biparietal diameter
(distance between the temples) of the
fetus is greater than 23 mm, an accuracy
rate of 100 percent was achieved.
