I have my nipples pierced and I just found out i'm pregnant. If I take my nipple rings out will I be able to breastfeed or are my nipples destroyed?

Depends if the piercer went through your milk ducts when you got them. Their not supposed to, but sometimes its hard, and it happens. I don't know how to tell if thats happened to you though. Maybe look it up on google or something.

So if they went through my milk ducts no milk will come out? Aren't my boobs going to explode when my milk comes in?

Hey I had the same prob. I had mine peirced and took em out when I found out I was preg.. Took em out at 8 weeks preg actually. I am now 7 1/2 months, how far were u when u took em out? I asked my doctor and he said it should be okay, but if the peircer got the milk ducts, then milk flow wouldnt be good enough to breastfeed so he said I will just have to try and see but it should be fine. He also said a little milk might come out of the peirced holes if their not fully healed and closed (which they are for the most part, but not a little actually) but he said that wouldnt be a big problem or anything so im sure u can still breastfeed. Im going to the first month*

What is all this talk about ruining and exploding???? A few milk ducts might be damaged however you still have plenty left and unless your piercer had no clue what he was doing then it should be fine. I have mine pierced and I dont plan on taking them out even when I do breastfeed.

I have heard that you are not suppose to breast feed unless you have had your rings out for at least eleven months and they are completely healed.
I dont know if that is true, but that is what I have heard.

It's a matter of professional opinion. Some doctors say that you should take them out and others say its not a problem. I've spoken with my doctor and having them in or out is totally up to me because either way the baby will be fine. Some women prefer to take the ring out when they are actually breastfeeding but others keep them in.

Huh?
How in the world does one breastfeed with a ring in one's nipple?? The poor baby!
Or do you just take out the piercing during the feeding?

Shocked and imaganing,

Wow.. I talked to my doc about it too, both my pregnancy doctor, and my regular medical doctor. .He said he definitly would never reccomend breastfeeding with nipples still peirced and said its actually kind of unsanitary. . U know u can never get rings perfectly clean and thats what your baby is sucking on, unless u take them out while feeding. But that would be frequently.... He said as long as I had taken the rings out I would be ok. I took them out once I found out I was preg. But also, if u dont take them out till just when u have the baby, they would still have to go through the healing process.. Wow, ive just never heard that. But u dont have to wait 11 months either tho.

I talked to a midwife and a doctor before getting them done because I wanted to make sure I could breastfeed. No you can never get the jewelery clean but you cant get your skin all that clean either! Breast milk contains antibacterial agents that can help as long with a proper cleaning. You can even keep them in while breastfeeding and there is no evidence to show that it affects the baby's palate in anyway especially if you are wearing barbells are oppose to rings Smile
and mercyrose how it is impossible to imgine breastfeeding with a ring in your nipple??...

Darling,
[that feels really weird at the top of a letter Confused ]
i've breastfed two babies, and I have a pretty good imagination, but this one blows me!
Esp. After my second, she never did learn to "latch" completely rite, and anything that'd been in her way would've had her giving up. She quit at 5 months as it was! (she still sucks on the bottle the same way as she used to bfd and it looks funny!)
wouldn't a baby suck on the ring instead of the breast, not even considering frustration with getting around it or not liking the taste/feel or it rubbing baby's mouth and getting sore?
Well, I guess I can imagine...

Lol! The way you put it makes this all seem so ridiculous. I've had a child but never breast fed nor did I even have my nipples pierced at the time. The barbell just creates a ball on either side of the nipple so latching shouldnt prove all that difficult...Im willing to try it anyway...If it doesnt work I will bottle feed.

I got my nipples pierced about a year and a half ago. They're still not healed. The piercer pierced them with 12 gauge instead of 14. I can't imagine breastfeeding with them in. I'm going to take them out and hope for the best.

As long as you asked your doctor and they said it was fine, then I would go with that.
I personally was just wondering about sanitation. Because piercings contain so much bacteria and infection. But, I am not educated in the whole breastfeeding thing.

how is it that piercings contain so much piercing and infection? Once a piercing is healed its a perfectly .C.L.E.A.N. Fistula of skin like any other part of your body

Sorry, so prone to bacteria. Not always full of bacteria, but can carry it very easily.
They have to be taken care of much better than just regular skin so that they do not get infected. That is what I meant.
