I Need Advice!!!!!!!!!
Posted: 05-18-04 00:15am

Hey everyone,
I am 18 and recently me and my boyfriend had a condom break on us, I then took plan b, boy did that suck. Anyways we have now decided that I should get on birth control to prevent this scare in the future. Now what I need advice on is a seperate situation. My mom does not know that I am sexually active I would love to tell her but unfortunantely she was raised like a nun and was a virgin till she got married at the age of 29, so I think she would be way too disappointed if I tell her, I know she wouldn't trip too bad, but she thinks weird because of how she was raised. I plan on getting on the pills, so how in the world can I hide that?!?! I mean I have to take them everyday it seems impossible. I'm considering not telling her straight up, but not putting too much effort into hiding them either, if she sees them on her own, oh well!! What do you guys think?

Hi chula - for those of us who are a bit older, it used to be exactly like what you describe, for everybody! It can seem a bit strange when I see so many teenagers are having sex at 14 or 15, with their parents permission, even having their boyfriends stay over!

But you are 18, and you sound like you are pretty mature about what you are doing, and that you have a pretty good relationship with your mother even if you don't think she'd be okay about you having sex. The fact is, she is probably perfectly aware that these days you aren't going to wait until you are married, and she may sort of know you already are doing it. But there's no point in rubbing her nose in it, right?

Anyway, I was on the pill living at home, when I was 17, and it is possible to be discrete about it. It helps if you know your mother doesn't snoop through your things! The trouble when you have to hide it, is remmembering to take the darn thing every day, if you can't keep them someplace where you'll remmember like next to your toothbrush. What you'll just need to do is keep them someplace she won't see them but keep a reminder someplace to make sure you don't forget, because that is the main thing, is to take them every single day without fail!

Good luck!

Thanks janet for your advice. I guess i'll just start off by keeping them to myself. My mom doesn't go through my things because i'm a good kid, like I do great in school, and i've never been in any real trouble so she spends most of her time snooping through my brother's things...Lol. What worries me most is what if I have to take them everyday at noon lets say, and one day we happen to be having lunch together or in the car on the way to the mall or something like that. What in the world will I do, because I plan on being very consistent with the time of taking the pills each day in order to insure that they work to the best of their ability.

Hey.....I would suggest taking ur pills at night....I take mine at 9:30 every night because I am always awake. But I don't hide mine, they are ont the kitchen counter.....Lol. Also, you could get on the shot, or patch, or the have a vaginal ring and implants that are used for birth control. You should explore all your options before deciding on the pill. I didn't want to be on the pill but my doctor wanted me on it for 3 months before she out me on the shot to make sure I do ok. But personally, I would go for another form of birth control. The shot is only every 3 months and u change ur patch once a week for 3 weeks and in the 4th week u dont put one on. Pretty easy huh? Lol. Hope this helps.......

Thanks kissie , I read about the shot and the patch but i've never ever been on birth control so I wanted to start pretty basic, I probably will eventually change to something more comfortable, but the shot kind of scares me since they say it takes away your period completely, I know most girls would be trilled, but i'd be scared. Thanks everyone for your opinions, oh and if you have any recommended pill brands let me know, or tell me your experiences with pills. Thanks again.

I also went on the pill when I was 18. I started out on ovcon but I had break thru bleeding so then I was put on lo ovral. I'm presently on kariva which are working great for me!

If you're planning on hiding your "sex life' from your mom, I recommend taking the pill first thing in the morning. If you take it at night and by chance your not at home at your usual time, you might forget because you're getting home late or whatever. First thing in the morning is pretty basic... You wake up.... Take the pill and no more worries the rest of the day.

Its hard to tell your parents that you want to start having sex. My parents werent even that religious but I still dont think I would have told them. I guess its easier for them to tell their son to buy a condom than it is to tell their daughter to go on the pill.

Good luck...
