Post Retinal Detachment Surgery Problems Posted: 06-01-04 12:02pm
Hi , I have an injury to my right eye with
a silly plastic thing on elastic which
went through the surface of the eye and
tore the retina. I started with a
detachment and had surgey which was cryo
surgery. This op fail ed to repair the
damage and it began to come off again so
it was repeated , this also failed and the
retina began spliting and a third op was
done this time also using a scleral
buckle. This has stopped the retina from
detaching but the pain and discomfort I
have been left with afterwards is
sometimes unbearable to which I have lost
two jobs through , both physical jobs ,
quite heavy. I have returned repeatably
to the hospital who have not been able to
offer any help , I have asked about
removal of the buckle as im convinced that
it is the cause of most of the pain I have
but they say that is not an option. This
surgery was carried out in may 2003 and so
its a long time ago really now , I have no
idea what to do , ive complained to the
hospital authorities about the situation
because there must be something someone
can do , I cannot believe that this is how
im going to have to live my life from now
on. Does anyone else have this problem
after surgery , does anyone have any idea
what I can do.
Thanks

Sorry , also there is a large distortion
in the central vision of the damaged eye
that makes letters look out of shape ,
kinda like a cracked mirror and lines dont
look straight either , they have said the
macular had not been disturbed but as much
as I know about this area of the eye and
my symtomes I would say it had been , it
also flashes around that area too , and I
get double vision at distance and my eyes
sometimes feel lazy when I try to focus on
a pc monitor

Was this a work injury? What about
seeking another opinion, you should have
that right! What about an attorney? It
sure seems like something went wrong, I
sure hope you get the help you need soon!
I am no Dr. But should you be doing a
lot of heavy lifting after a surgery like
that, I understand what pain is and I do
understand about having to work! What
about vocational rehab in your area where
they can re-train you for another job? I
sure hope you get some answers soon! The
medical system is horrible anymore!
Sincerely,
sandy
