Does anyone here have a dx of add? I
think I have it but not sure what to do.
It affects me at work and at home. At
work I have to sit through long meetings,
and after about 10 minutes my mind is
wandering. I have to get up and move
around every so often and i'm always
tapping my foot or doodling or doing
something with my hands. Can't sit
still! I feel like I "miss" a lot of
info because i'm so unfocused. At home,
I get home from work and I can't just
focus on one activity. I'll try to make
dinner, do laundry, check email, make
phone calls... All at one time. I have
a hard time just staying in the kitchen
and cooking without multi-tasking and then
I end up doing everything about
half-right. It's starting to get to me.
Somehow I made it through college and
grad school by just studying a little at a
time and taking a lot of breaks. Now
that i'm in the work force, I have to
abide by the hours and rules and can't
just switch activities so frequently.
Anyways, I want to try medication but I
don't know who to go to! I have my
yearly appt. At the obgyn in a couple
weeks but he doesn't seem like the right
person. I never go to a general
practitioner (don't even have one!)
because I really never get sick. Should
I go to a family physician or find a
psychologist????
Anyone w/ advice, please let me know!
Thanks

I used to feel all of these things. I
made it through college but sitting at a
desk or in a meeting was impossible. I
was constantly starting new tasks and
finishing nothing. I went to my
insurance companies website and picked a
psychiatrist who specialized in adult add.
I called and made an appointment.
After a conversation about my symptoms she
gave me a prescription for adderall. I
felt focussed about 30 minutes after
taking the medication. Work is
interesting now. I was on the edge of
losing my job. Now my boss loves me.
And I finally had enough initiative to go
to grad school. If you post an email
address i'll give you my doctor's contact
info.

Exactly (add Symptoms) Posted: 09-20-04 13:21pm
I am exactly the way bluejeanlady
describes herself. My doc put me on
strattera first, but that didn't seem to
help. Recently, she wrote me a script
for zoloft. This makes no sense to me
because though i'm not a doctor, my
understanding is that zoloft is basically
an antidepressant. Jsa makes me think I
should try adderall.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

You have common signs of add. I would
seek a psychologist to have testing to see
if this is indeed your problem. If you go
to a Dr. He can give you meds. And it
could work against you if you don't have
add. I would try neuro feedback first.
The results are great! The results are
slow to see it takes about 20 sessions for
the traning to set. It is kinda sneeks up
on you. Sheilao

I have it. It took a long time for me to
talk to a doctor about it and now that i'm
on meds things are so different! I am on
20 mg adderall xr and i've been doing
great. I freaked out at first because
adderall is has gotten such a bad rap
lately, however, after being on it for a
few days I realized that I definitely have
add. No adverse reactions to the drug
except that I can pay attention to things
now. I can read a book without skipping
around on the page, I can start dinner and
finish, I can sit through a movie without
wondering "damn, how much longer", etc. .
. I've been this way since I was little,
which is one of the determining factors in
whether or not you have add. My Dr. Is
an add specialist and said that he gets
lots of people in his office trying to get
on adderall (for the up feeling or to lose
weight, etc) and one of the ?'s he asks is
"how long have you been this way". If
they say it just started or not that long
then he focuses on something else. Add
is something that some people grow out of
but not into so if you can remember being
this way pretty far back then i'd say "go
for it" and see about getting on some
meds. They can literally change your
life. Only drawback i've had is that now
that i'm on adderall I have the sex drive
of a flipping 18 year old boy. . . I'm
not kidding. Supposedly most people lose
their sex drive. . . I guess I got the
opposite. Can't think of any other
problems though.

Another thing you might try that worked
for me...Exercise. When I started a good
low impact exercise program, I was able to
remember things better, stay more
organized, and kept things in focus. I
didn't realize the exercise helped until I
had to stop because of an injury. I
found that when I wasn't exercising, the
"fog" came back, and I couldn't keep up
with the heavy work load I usually carried
around in my head. I'm not knocking
meds, I may soon feel the need for them as
my work load increases, but still try the
exercise.
