What Is Needed to Get Birth Control Pills
Posted: 06-20-04 22:25pm

Hi everyone. I have a question. I've been going out with my girl for over 9 months, and for the last 4 she's been trying to get birth control pills. But it's always something as to why she cant get them. Now before you think we are a couple of teens i'm 29 and she is 25 both have health insurance and such. First she said she needed a physical but that the doctor told her she couldnt have it done cause she was on her period at the time. She then after the physical she said the doctor needed her to have a pap smear test before she can have the pills, this took another month to get an appointment. Now she says she has to wait for the results of the pap smear test before she can make an appointment with the doctor to get the pills. My thing is that everyone I ask and everywhere I read all women need to get the pills was a physical, and that pap smears are only for checking for cervical cancer. I think now she is just stalling. It's been over 4 months she's been "trying" to get the pill. What do you think?? Any input is very much welcomed.

If ya ask me I think she's just not sure if she wants to go on birth control....When you go in for a complete physical exam they do the pap smear the same time(you just wait for the results)....At least that's what they do in around here. I am like this...Its been almost a year and I still havent made up my mind.A woman's gotta identify all the pros & cons of be on the "pill". What your girlfriend needs is alot of time to think this over, this is a very big step to take and a woman has to be very sure she wants this! Yes I know its frustrating but be patient. Maybe talk to her about it. Thats what partners are for, to be supportive of one another, isnt it? Well best of luck. :d

It is odd to me that she would lie to you about it though. I mean if she doesn't want to get on the pill then why doesn't she just tell you that?
I have never had to wait for the results of a pap test before going on the pill. And, they can do paps when you are on your period. They don't recommend it, but they can. But, maybe she didn't want them to do it when she was bleeding, and that is completely understandable.
Of course, she could be going to a doctor that is giving her the runaround, so I am not saying that she is lying. But, it seems very shady to me. Besides pap test results shouldn't take any longer than two weeks. So, she probably would know by now.
It happened this way for me, I called and made an appointment. I went in, had my exam and left with pills in my hand. Of course, I had to wait until I started my next period before I started taking them, but regardless I had my pills in my hand when I left. And my doctor only calls to tell me my pap test results if there is something wrong. If everything checks out alright, they usually don't even call.
So, I dunno. I would straight up ask her about this. If she doesn't want to try the pill then she could try various other methods of birth control.

I was told by my doctor that birth controls free, no matter how old you are as they can perscribe it to you for free. I didn't have to have a physical exam or anything. Maybe your girlfriends just not sure if she wants to go on the pill, or that she's happy with you're current method of contraception

I don't know who your doctor is, but that isn't true. I mean, he/she can give you free samples and if he/she wishes can give you free samples for the rest of your life, but that is not common procedure.
But, if it is prescribed and you have to get it at a drugstore, that will cost you. Clinics like family planning give it to you at a discounted rate, (or free if you are under 1Cool but even there if you are over 18 you have to pay for it.

When I got put on bc I had to have a physical done which they did that day because if you make an appointment to get on bc they shouold know that you will need a physical and make time for it on that day. They gave me the pills on the same day and said I will need a pap before they can renew my perscription so we made an appointment that day for me to come back. I went back a few months later and had that done. Then they refilled it. I dont know if she is lying but I cant see how a docter would refuse you getting bc if he knew you were sexually active at that time. As long as he checks you for a physical to make sure you wont react to it than I woud think it would be fine? Hope this helps! Good luck

Birth control is free in the uk, but not in the us, where the original poster lives.

Birth control pills have medical risks; it's possible your girlfriend is afraid of the side effects.

Does your gf smoke by any chance? It's dangerous to smoke and be on the pill.

It took me more than 1 day. Because first I contemplated for a few months. Then went to the doctor after I finally made up my mind, got 2 months free sample, had to go back to the doctor 3 months later for a pap smear and then got a prescription for it. So maybe her doctor is picky. It took me over a month to get my appt for a pap smear.

I scheduled an appointment at planned parenthood. I came in, they gave me a pap-smear and the urine-test (urine test to make sure I wasn't pregnant at the time) and, since that result got back while I was having my exam, I then took home 3 months of pills. Scheduling the appointment was very easy; I called friday and came in monday. Planned parenthood is very nice and caring.

I have never had any adverse effects on the pill. I know some women do, but like all side effects, they don't happen to the majority of the population, they happen to the minorty. Chances are your gf will be totally fine on the birth control pills; and you need to assure her of this! Even if she does get side effects, at least she tried. She can just stop taking them, it's as easy as that. If she qualifies, she may not even have to pay for them! And it's not like they're going to kill her - not that it's impossible; nothing is impossbile, but i've never heard of a woman dying on birth control pills.

birth control is free in the us.....If you go to planned parenthood. You can just walk in....You don't even need an appointment. Also, if they prescribe something to you that they don't carry at the clinic, they'll give you a "green card" and that will allow you free prescriptions at drugstores. Always a good experience there!

The pap smear is for many different things, the pap can be to find out which prescription is best for her body. It can also check for cancer and stds. These tests are critical and also the only way to get some kind of protection, so just be patient and wear some condoms until her results come back.
