Question From a Reporter -- Braces Posted: 06-28-04 12:38pm
Hello,
i am a freelance reporter for smart money
magazine and am working on a story about
orthodontists and braces. I'm looking for
people who have the following stories (or
other interesting ones they'd like to
share)
1. Patients who have gone to general
dentists for orthodontic treatments and
have not been satisfied with treatment.
Has anyone had to switch orthodontists
mid-treatment? Or go to another
orthodontist to have the work re-done?
2. Has anyone ever been able to negotiate
their fees with an orthodontist or get a
discount for paying up front?
3. Has anyone ever gone to a large
orthonditic clinic or chain? Have you
been satisfied?
4. Has anyone taken their child in for
preventative treatment at age 7?
5. Has anyone had their teeth go back to
the way they were before braces?
6. Anyone had lingual braces or
invisalign? What did you think?
7. Anyone had allergies to braces?
Any help or first-hand stories about the
above issues would be greatly appreciated.

Ortho Posted: 06-28-04 14:40pm
Hi,sarah-
I had 2 of the situations
listed.I had my ortho done by a general
dentist and he started me at age 6.This
was done in the late "60's.The way it was
explained to my mom there was new research
that said early ortho would prevent full
braces later.Wrong-i wore braces until I
was 13.As a result,i had a ton of decay
from wearing the bands for so
long.Ironiclly,i have worked as a dental
assistant for 16 years.I did not have very
good orthodontic result. If I were to have
ortho again,i would also need orthognathic
surgery to correct my lower jaw
discrepency.I wish my mother had been a
little more informed, she was under the
impression that the dentist who did my
ortho was an orthodontist.I did a little
research through our local dental
society,he was never an
orthodontist.But,hey,things could be
worse.I have many patients compliment me
on my teeth. You cannot tell there is
anything wrong unless you are in the
dental field. The teeth are straight and in
good repair,so i'll leave well enough
alone.Good luck with your story!Patty
