Bipolar/trying to Conceive/pregnancy Questions Posted: 06-29-04 18:28pm
Hi, i'm new to this message board. I saw
some posts about bipolar and i, too, am
bipolar, on medications that are vital to
my mental stability. My husband and I
have been trying to conceive for over a
year now. I'm wondering if it's my meds.
But after reading some of the posts, i'm
not sure it'd be a good thing to get
pregnant, due to having to go off all my
meds. If I miss a day's dose of meds, I
go right into a manic episode.
I've been pregnant before, and we have a 3
yr old son. I wasn't diagnosed until
after I had him. Just a year ago, I was
diagnosed. We want another baby so very
badly, but I wonder if it's worth it now,
or not. Can anyone give me some advice?
I'm open to all honest answers, whether it
be for or against getting pregnant.
I am just so torn over this.

Hey manic...I'm also bipolar- bipolar 2 to
be exact- it really depends on what
medications you are taking... Personally,
I say no, do not go off your meds, at all.
There are other meds, if the ones you
are on right now prevent you from
conceiving, or are just dangerous while
being pregnant, that you possibky could
switch to in place of your regular ones.
It really isn't good to mess with your
system if you are on a really good pill
regima already...It might take a lot of
tweeking w/other drugs, but it really is
up to you. You need to talk to your dr,
and your pdoc about this- and ask what you
can do in this particular
situation...Goodluck though!!!

Hi zilbucks! Thank you for your input.
I've been researching the meds i'm on, and
all but the wellbutrin are listed as "c"
and "d" drugs...Which, from my
understanding, are the most dangerous
during pregnancy. I will follow your
advice, and speak to my Dr. About this
next time I go in to see her, in august.
I'm really glad I found this message
board!! I think it will helpful to me.
Thanks again!!
