Stomach Pain And More / Gastric Bypass Posted: 07-01-04 14:16pm
I have pains that come and go in the
region of my small stomach (just under my
left rib cage). My gastric bypass was
five years ago and very successful as far
as weight loss and maintenance. However,
I also suffer from joint aches in my
elbows and hip as well as aches and pains
like a terrible flu. The aches and pains
typically start a few days after a cycle
of stomach pains and have lasted anywhere
from a week up to a few months or the next
round of stomach aches. This has been
ongoing for two years. I've been to
several doctors and they have concluded:
no hpylori ulcer, blood work normal except
a slightly low wbc (that i've had for
five+ years), cat scan showed nothing
unussual, xrays of elbows and back show
nothing, colonoscopy was fine. I've been
given a round of cipro thinking that I
might have a blind loop bacterial
infection, but that didn't help. The
doctors are still considering crohn's
disease and celiac disease, and I will
porbably have an upper endoscopy next.
But I am just starting to lose hope (oh
sure - I am also depressed), and I would
greatly appreciate it if anyone can help
me.....

When is the pain worse? After eating? On
any empty stomach? Is it better by meal?
Is there any heartburn? Any nausea or
vomiting associated with it? How long
does the pain last? What is the frequency
of the pain/ how does it generally get
better? More details and upper gastro
intestinal endoscopy is needed too. Do
the blood tests you have undergone have
the rheumatoid factor test, erythrocyte
sedimentation rate, c reactive protein
etc.? If so what are the results.
With more details and evaluation<
homeopathic medicine would be of help to
you.

The pain is worse when there is food in my
stomach. For example when I wake in the
morning, I do not have pain. It seems
that eating helps the pain at first, but
then it starts to hurt about 30 to 60
minutes after eating. Yes, I am mildly
nauseated at times (about every other week
for a day or two). I also burp all the
time extremely loud and long (like my
teanagers when the guzzle soda pop). And
I do this with or without food in my
stomach. My pain lasts anywhere from an
hour to a three days off and on. The
pains were about every other month for a
couple weeks of this one hour thing or two
to three days in a row, and I have no idea
why it starts or goes away. I've kept a
journal of what I am eating, and when it
is in a "flare up" -- acidic foods do hurt
more, but other than that I am unable to
draw any conclusions about what foods I
should avoid. I am taking nexium and
chewing on tums, but I have found
something at the health food store that
seems to have made it go away once this
winter. It is dgl licorice, and I just
chew one of these about 15 minutes before
I eat. The blood work that I had done
showed that I do not have celiac disease.
My endoscopy ended on a scary note. The
doctor told me that I probably have 1 cm
of barrett's esophagus (he took four
biopsie) and chronic gastritis of the
fundus where he took two more biopsies. I
am scared because all he said was, "i
didn't find any tumors." and then his
nurse told me that the biopsies are
basically checks for cancer. When I think
about all the other things that are wrong
and the nausea and the pictures of my
fundus that had white and yellow scares on
it -- I am scared! I won't get the biopsy
results until 7-15. All of those blood
test things that you asked about were
tested and normal including a negative ana
result. In my most recent blood work the
only things that were flagged are as
follows: wbc 3.2 low, rdw 11.2 low, ly%
44.7 high. Just to conclude, if it is
cancer I will go crazy for awhile, but at
least I will know what it is that I am
battling. Please don't hold back your
thoughts.

Update - Stomach Pain And More / Gastric Bypass Posted: 07-12-04 13:01pm
I was just given my endoscopy biopsy
results (early thank goodness), and the
results are not cancer! Yippee! I have a
bacterial infection. Blind loop syndrome
is the name that my rheumotolgist called
it. The most amazing thing is that this
one thing accounts for every pain and
symptom that I have been experiencing for
the past 21 months. And it will more than
likely be managed with antibiotics. I am
starting a 21 day dose of levaquin (500 mg
once a day). I will also continue with
the nexium and dgl for the gastritis. I
plan to ask my gastroenterologist about
probiotics during my appointment on
thursday. The doctors/experts used to say
that this syndrome was only possible with
a very old bypass procedure, but i'm here
to tell you that I am proof positie that
they were incorrect! Don't get me wrong,
i'd still go through with the bypass, but
I sure wish my doctors could have been
more knowledgable about this possibility
and discovered it about 20 months ago!

Thank You! Posted: 07-28-04 11:54am
Your suffering may have saved me months of
testing! I have been having the exact
same symptoms for the last 3 months. I
have thought it was stress related, which
is possible. I have just been going
through a major life change (moved across
the country, new job, new home, etc.) --
also post op gastric bypass 2 yrs. I
haven't followed all the rules since the
surgery, but have felt great and am 150%
glad that I went through it all. I was
really starting to worry that I had "done
something" to myself because of "not
following all the rules". I am going to
the Dr. Next month though just to make
sure everything is okay, but am going to
have them do blood work first and check
for a bacterial infection. Thanks again
and i'm glad your test results came out
okay. Hope you're feeling well again!
