Asthma, Or Something Else? Posted: 07-05-04 16:07pm
My doctor has been treating me for asthma,
which seemed to develop when I hit about
18. First of all, I find this strange,
as my brother grew out of asthma when he
was 14.
I have recently started to think it may
not be asthma, as I have good days and bad
days. For example, I go to the gym and
run 5km, row 2km and then lift some
weights - I usually feel great. Then,
later in the evening, I run upstairs and I
am seriously out of breath.
The tightness I feel in my chest is
usually accompanied by the feeling of
having a bubble in my throat, and my
glands seem to be up a lot. I also
suffer frequently from heartburn and pains
in the stomach.
Is it possible that all these things are
related, and what sort of questions should
I be asking my doctor?
Thanks in advance,
mike.

What are you taking for your heartburn?
You might want to investigate the
heartburn part. I say this because I
started having heartburn around 18, but
never thought much about it. It started
getting worse in college. Then the other
year I started having lung pains.. Like
asthma. I would exercise and my lungs
would get tight.. Just like you were
describing. I went to the doctor and
they started treating for asthma, but no
one could figure out why I was developing
asthma at 23. They blamed in on
allergies.. But I never did buy it.
Then about 6 months later my heartburn got
really bad so I went to the doctor and
they diagnosed me with gerd (chronic
heartburn basically) and put me on
prevacid which I am still on today. I
was researching it and it said one of the
symptoms of gerd is asthma like symptoms.
Basically what's happening is the acid
from your stomach can get up in your
airways and irritate your lungs. Now
that I am on prevacid, I have little to no
asthma symptoms anymore. When you
exercise it can make the heartburn worse
which may contribute to your pains later
on in the evening. If you don't want to
go to the doctor, try to start taking
prilosec otc medicine. Take it as
instructed (i believe it's a once a day
pill) for a few weeks and see if it helps.
This may be your problem. Good luck
with it all.. I know it's frustrating!
