I am a 28 year old female, have been
experiencing severe abdominal pain for
about 3 months. Cat scan showed
contracted gallbladder, when I ended up in
er because of the pain, they suggested I
get a hida scan to further check my
gallbladder. I have been to a gi
specialist, yesterday as a matter of fact,
and he will not order this test. I feel
that because of my age, I am not being
listened to or taken seriously. I have
been to at least three doctors since the
pain started, and their first question is
always, "how's your stress level?" I can't
help but think that if I were age 55, I
wouldn't have been asked these questions.
I am quite sure that my gallbladder is the
problem, but I had a normal ultrasound (no
stones) so I am having trouble getting
doctors to rule it out completely with
more extensive tests. Yesterday the
specialist said that I had irritable bowel
syndrome, and ordered a colonoscopy. I am
having absolutely no trouble with my
bowels at all, no diarrhea, no
constipation, etc. I believe that
irritable bowel syndrome was just a
convenient diagnosis. How can I get a
doctor to listen, and get this cleared up
before it causes me real harm?? Thank you

Hi there! For years, I suffered from an
ailment and felt like I was being
ignored...If you really feel the doctor is
not taking you seriously, find a new
doctor. Seriously...
To get one that can help. Ask around.
Surely there is someone else you know that
has had to see a doctor in the area you
are looking for...An internist or a gastro
doctor. Word of mouth can be your best
way, sometimes, to find a doctor or to not
find a doctor...As the case may be.
I hope you get some help!

You're right. Since my last posting, I
sought a second opinion, and was
pleasantly surprised to find a doctor who
I felt actually listened to me. She
ordered the scan that nobody had agreed to
order in the past, and was very pleasant
and helpful. She also addressed my pain,
which doctors nowadays are increasingly
reluctant to do. I guess it can take
years to find a doctor who you can
establish a good rapport with.
Thanks again!
