Sciatica And Fallen Arches Posted: 07-11-04 10:38am
For years i've had an intermittent pain in
my lower back and hip that shoot down my
leg when i'm active and aches when i'm
inactive. If I press on certain points on
my calf the pain is relieved. The pain
returns when I stop pressing.
Does this sound like sciatia?
This condition would come and go but
recently it has come and stayed.
Also recently i've developed an intense
pain on the heel of my left foot (same
side as hip pain) that seems to be a
symptom of a fallen arch.
Can sciatia cause a fallen arch?
I have a job that requires physcial labor
and quite a bit of walking. It is getting
increasingly harder to move around. I
will see a doctor but I would like to get
some idea, if I can, as to what the
problem may be.

I think this should really be under
something like pain management, muscular
& nerve disorders or maybe
orthopedics??
I don't think sciatica can cause a fallen
arch directly but perhaps the way you've
been walking due to the pain has??
I would go & see aphysical therapist
or chiropractor for advice before seeing a
dr - although x-rays might help all round.
It does sound though (due to pain going
when you press certain points) as if it
could be a nerve being pinched that's
causing the problem.

Have developed sciatica due to a bad gait
and arthritis in the opposite knee so that
I lean on the right all the time and have
developed a strange gait. My massage
therapist, who also does acupressure sent
me to a place that does orthotics. The
new shoes feel wierd but help.
It sounds like you have found some of the
acupressure points on your own.
Acupuncture works well too, though I tend
to stay away from chiropracters.
If you do a lot of bending and lifting try
and find out how to do it correctly as
this tends to make things worse.
Ice helps the pain if you apply it to your
back at s1. Heat can make it worse.
Good luck.
