I am looking for some words of wisdom. I
found my 5 year old daughter on the floor
yesterday morning with vomit dried to her
hair. She was in a trance. She
wouldn’t respond to us at all. We called
an ambulance and they told us she was
having a seizure. They brought her to
the hospital where they took blood, urine,
a ct, mri and eeg. Everything turned up
normal except for the eeg. The
neurologist said that she had an
abnormality in her left side and she is
pretty sure she had a grand mal seizure.
She put my daughter on tegretol.
Now to any parents out there with a
similar situation, we would love to hear
from you. We can’t keep our eyes off of
her. We got a baby monitor and we are
terrified that she will have another
seizure while she is sleeping or eating or
whatever and choke. We just got home
from the hospital a couple hours ago and
don’t know where to go from here.

Daughter's Seizure Posted: 07-13-04 13:51pm
Gone through this w/ my son and it is very
scary. No matter how many I c him have
it is still hard to watch. My son is on
valproic acid and seems to be doing well
on it. I know it is frightening but this
will be a part of your lives now and once
your daughter's seizures are uncontrol w/
her med... It does get easier. I always
watch the time limit on the seizures and
if they go past 5 mins. I call 911 and I
write down what they look like and how
long once I get a chance to. My son's
doctor askes these kind of ?'s, so keep a
log.

Daughters Seizures Posted: 09-08-04 15:55pm
I saw your article and I feel for you. I
don't know how hard it is for a parent to
go through with having a child having a
seizure. I starting having seizures at
the age of 14. My younger sister found me
in my older sisters closet having a
seizure. My younger sister was scared and
wouldn't come near me for 2 weeks. She
was scared something was going to happen
again. I got teased and made fun of all
the time at school for having seizures.
Your daughter is going to need all the
support she can get from. I know that she
is only 5, but as soon as she starts
school it is going to get harder for her.
Whatever you do, don't treat her any
different than you did before she had her
seizures. It really annoyed me that my
parents did that. I know that they did it
cause they cared, but my mom wouldn't let
me do alot of things that all my other
friends did and I found out that I could
the stuff. I have gran-mal sezure and am
on 2 different meds right now. They are
under control for now. It's been almost 6
months since my last one. I am now 21.
All you can do for her is try different
meds. Don't stay up and worry about her.
God will keep safe. You can't spend your
whole life worrying about every move she
makes, because if you do, it will make you
sick.

i agree with ceb totally. My little boy
had his first seizure when he was 7 weeks
old and it was very scary. As ceb says it
is a part of ur lives now and no matter
how hard it is to deal with it is
something you all have to learn to live
with. My son is also on valporic acid and
seems to suit him well. The times I have
found to watch out for him the most is
when he is unwell and got a high temp.
Wish you all the best and even though its
easy for people to say try not to worry
too much

I of course am also going to tell you not
to worry, although that's much easier said
than done. My seizures started at age 4,
but we didn't know what they were until I
was 15. Looking back, my mom is really
glad it happened that way. I was able to
have a normal childhood. I even trained
20 hours/week on a gymnastics team for
years. She has said that if she knew it
was epilepsy, she probably wouldn't have
let me done that or a number of other
things that made my childhood great (like
riding my bike all over the neighborhood
with my friends). Please don't take away
her childhood because you're so worried
about her. Good luck to you both.

I am so sorry that several of you have
started down the road of seizures, but so
glad that you are finding support! When
we started this 6 years ago I was not
computer literate at all and it took 3.5
years to find support!!
Samdonato, I wish you well as you start
meds. Have you found a ped neuro to treat
her? This is very important.
Journaling it all is very important! My
son started seizures at or before age 5
but was not diagnosed until age 7. I
still get questions for specific info from
infancy on. He is 13 now! I also ask for
copies of tests and reports and keep them
in a 3 ring binder....(just had to get a
larger one!)
my 15 year old daughter has also been
diagnosed recently after some smaller
seizures.
Best wishes to all of you. Glad to hear
that medication has been tolerated ok...
A great book to start out with is john
freeman's guide to childhood
epilepsy....Newest cover is red, but the
blue it not too old either. Dr greg
holmes also has a great book, (but I will
have to go look at the name...Guide to
neurology possibly....He is a great ped
neuro)
