I posted this in pain magaement to, but
just thought I would post in here aswell
seeing it is back related also. My
husband suffers from sciatica, or a
bulging or herniated disc in his back that
is pressing on the sciatic nerve, the pain
radiates from the top of the buttocks,
down the back of his left leg, right down
to the bottom of his foot. He can barely
walk sometimes. He has had a nerve sleeve
root injection which just made the pain
flare up even worse, he then had an
epidural steroid injection to try and numb
the pain and that didn't work either. He
is now considering having a micro
discectomy, which is where the surgeon
cuts out a piece of the disc where it is
pressing on the nerve. Has anyone else
ever been in this situation ? What do you
use for pain control in the mean time ?

Hi luvnlife,
that's great, I would love to hear from
you and what your doctor has to say about
it. It is so hard to find anyone who has
actually recieved a diagnosis of this
problem and treatment that has worked.

Sciatica Nerve-lower Back Pain Causing Partial Parallysis Posted: 10-27-03 20:16pm
Hi
i am a first time visitor. I am trying
to find out something about the sciatica
nerve. Does anybody now what causes it
and is there any treatment for it? My
mother is having a lot of problems with it
and the doctors just seem to what to
medicate her, (nothing has worked so far),
and I was hoping to find out anything that
might help. If I find out anything I
will let all know.
Thanks

Hi wo,
what causes pain in the sciatic nerve is
usually a protruding or herniated disc in
the spine, the disc presses on the nerve
and causes severe pain in the lower back
and radiates down the buttocks and even as
far down as the foot. The reason the
doctors will only medicate your mother at
the moment is because they are very
hesitant to operate on someones back until
every other alternative method is tried
first. It sounds as though your mother
has already tried all the drugs and
therapy without relief, therefore I would
suggest for her to talk to her doctor
about being referred to a specialist such
as an orthapedic surgeon or neurosurgeon.
I have heard of some terrible experiences
from people who have had bone fusions, but
there seems to be better procedures
available such as a micro discectomy. The
surgeon takes the small piece of disc away
from the sciatic nerve where it is causing
the pain. There is also titanium disc
replacement currently being tested in
clinical trials with good results, but I
have no idea if it is available yet, might
be worth asking about. I hope your mother
finds some help soon.
Regards...

Sciatica...my Battle Posted: 11-14-03 12:54pm
I am 33 y.O. And I started battling this
1 year ago...I lifted a couch the wrong
way and boom...Within days my leg went
numb and I fell a few times, the pain was
unbearable. I saw numerous doctors until
one day someone believed me that there was
something wrong...I had an mri which
showed a bulging disc, sciatica and a
degenerative disease that is spelled
spondylolisthesis, I agreed to a
hemilaminectomy...It gave me 6 months of
freedom which I enjoyed until this
week...It is all starting over again and
my fiance is freaking out more than I
am...I think. He said that he cannot
stand to see me go through that again. I
was told by the doctor when he did the
surgery that there are no guarantees, he
told me that it may last 6 months or 6
years...The surgery only laid me up about
4 days but with weight lifting
restrictions for 12 weeks. My other
option which included rods and some other
extensive surgery would have possibly put
me out of work for 6 weeks...I took the
chance with the hemilaminectomy...Was it
worth it?...Yes because it gave me my life
back for 6 months...Now, however I am at a
crossroads...Do I do it again??? All I
know is that I need someone to talk to
that understands what I am going through
because at this point, I have noone but a
frustrated fiance that is freaking
out...

I am also having this problem..Sometimes
its hard for me to stand-up when I am
lying down or when I am lying down it's
hard for me to get into a comfortable
position or when I sit too long...
Should I make an appointment right away or
just stretch myself out and exercise
it???
It seem to be a problem after my boyfriend
visited and we had sex 2 weeks straight...

The only absolute indication for surgery
in disc problems is weakness. Pain can
often be managed by nerve blocks but if
not microdiscectomy is usually the best
option. I had a microdiscectomy two years
ago and I still get some sciatica - physio
afterwards is important, esp as often
other disks are degenerate. Xrays are
pointless if the signs and symptoms point
to a disc problem. Back pain alone
usually isn't a disk proplapse
