Question, Please Help. Posted: 07-13-04 15:37pm
I am just wondering. If my results come
out positive that I am pregnant. What
would my chances be of my child having
cancer or some disease. I don't mean to
sound stupid or anything but, my brother
who share the same birthday as me. He is
4 years older and had cancer. My nephew
when he was 2 months, my sister found out
he had cancer and he had to get a kidney
taken out at 6-9 months. My father is a
chain, smoker (smokes a pack a day and a
heavy drinker). He has bad lungs,
problems breathing and coughs up high
red/orange mucous but doesn't want to go
to the doctor. So we hope it's not lung
cancer. My mother has diabeties, and my
grandmother, and I have bronchitis .. But
it's been over a year now.
Am I just paraniod for no reason?

i know. We have those still suffering and
we just pray. It's sad to see my nephew
on his pumps. He has to tie it around his
nose to breathe. It's hard for him to run
and stuff.
I never really thought about it before.
Until I was looking at my nephews scar and
it hit me. Then I started thinking about
it.

I dont think (im not sure though) there is
a way to tell you the chances of
problems... The only thing there is to do
pretty much that I know of, if you are
pregnant, is to discuss with your ob/gyn
your family's health history. Then he/she
will know what there is more of a chance
for, or what to pay more attention to, so
if possible, to catch problems early
enough to possibly fix them. Your doctor
will tell you what is hereditary and the
chances of things happening, but I wouldnt
trust anyone but your doctor to tell you
these things. No point in stressing over
something that somebody that isnt a
professional told you.

Yea it is really all about what's in
you're family. When you go to the doc for
the first time you'll fill out a medical
history, so if I were you i'd make sure to
write all of these things down so that you
don't forget. And when the doc has your
medical history they know what to really
look for. Like in my family heart
disease, and hypertension are biggies. I
have hypertension, my gp died from a heart
attack (hear disease), my dad has
hypertension, and so many more people i'd
take to long to list. That is why I
really have to watch what I eat now that
i'm pregnant ,and I make sure to walk
everyday even if it is only 5 or 10
minutes around the living room.
But in your case some things you just have
to wait and see, I hope and pray that your
child would never get cancer, but just
because it does not come in young life,
doesn't mean it won't come later which we
all know. And some stuff is preventable.
Like my dad has lung cancer, and
eventhough cancer can be hereditary, his
cancer is caused by 30 years of smoking.
So I know that I won't spend time around
people that are smoking, b/c #1 it could
have adverse affects on my health and #2
since I am pregnant it may cause my baby
to have asthma. And that is what I mean
by preventable. And the other stuff may
in the future be inevitable ,but always
prepare yourself.

yeah, I hear u. If I am pregnant, I would
have to move out that's a fact, but your
right, always be prepared.
