Hi everyone i've just started taking the pill well actually I just finished taking my second pack of pills and i'm now on the one week pill-free break...I've seen that everyone on here is talking about sugar pills, we just don't take anything for one week over here but anyways my concern is that I finished my calendar pack on tuesday and I still haven't got my period I had unprotected sex so I was freaking out so I done a home pregnancy test and it turned out negative but the pharmacist told me I have to use morning urine as it wouldn't be accurate if not. So what i'm aaskingis first of all how accurate are home pregnancy test even when not done with morning urine if anyone of you has an idea!!!...And also how affective is the pill when you start taking it or when. Please give me some advice i'm so panicked.

First of all the contraceptive pill takes 2 weeks to start working effectively and your doctor should have explained that to you. If you did the home pregnancy test less than 3wks after you had unprotected sex then it would have come back negative as pregnancy hormones take 3 weeks to show up in urine. Also you should be using your first morning urine as that is when the hormone is most present. You should be taking the pill at the same time everyday. Some pills however allow a twelve hour window, but most doctors reccomend no longer than 3hours after your usual time.

I don't know if the pill in the uk is different but when I started taking the pill they were effective immediately. It even said so in the insturction leaflet that you are protected at once from your first pill (if you're on the combined 21 day pill which it sounds like you are). Your period usually takes a few days to show up once you finish your pack, so don't expect it to show up immediately. Also there may be a couple of irregular mnoths while your body gets used to these hormone changes. As for having unprotected sex, don't worry about it, the pill will have protected you just fine if you were taking them correctly Smile
