Depression And Smell & Taste Loss Posted: 07-25-04 13:31pm
Hi everyone!
I am new to this forum, male, 24, and have
been suffering from depressions for more
than 10 years now. Last year I lost my
sense of smell and no doctor knows why. I
have been checked by several ent
specialists, ct scan didn't show anything,
haven't had any head trauma or tumor...
My neurologist says the loss is due to the
depression, my limbic system is not
functioning correctly, not receiving smell
information.
Has anyone of you made any similar
experience?
Thanks in advance for your replies,
chrisx

I have never actually heard of this but
have come across some weird side effects
of meds, physical & mental
illnesses.
Depression often responds (without side
effects & without any problems re use
of meds etc) to using a ces machine
(approx cost $us200) check out these
machines via google or yahoo or at
dynamind.Com.
If you could reduce - even end - your
depression & if that is the cause of
your smell loss then presumably given time
your smell would return.

I had a similar experience several years
ago just before I finally went to a
doctor, I was about your age. I felt
like I was on another planet, it was the
worst i'd ever felt. At the time I was
not sleeping or eating well, could not
concentrate for more than a minute, etc.
I remember not being able to taste or
smell, so food was even less appealing,
even kind of repulsive. (or just
irritating because I couldn't taste even
really good food) I think it lasted a few
weeks but just eventually got better. I
didn't look into it specifically, just
assumed that I was feeling so poorly that
parts of my biology went into hibernation.
I also remember that I also felt
phsyically uncoordinated and awkward, not
really in my own body. I can't give you
any explanation or advice, except maybe
just keep eating well and excercising
daily, just wanted to tell you i've been
there.

Loss of Smell And Zinc Posted: 07-30-04 00:55am
The loss of taste and smell may be due to
a zinc defciency. People who are
depressed may have an abnormality in the
conversion of tryptophan to serotonin,
hence ssris. Tryptophan is also
indirectly necessary in the absorption of
zinc. Zinc is required in about 80
enzymes. Zinc needs to be combined with
picolinic acid for absorption across gut
membrane. Picolinic acid is produced
from tryptophan in the pancreas. If
there is a deficiency of tryptophan -
probably as a result of a high refined
carbohydrate diet, low in proteins - we
may have not only depression but also zinc
defciency.
Modern agricultural practices do not
replace zinc in the soil, and after twenty
years of growing a crop from a piece of
land, the soil becomes deficient in
zinc.
