Q: One Side Sore Throat

Okay, here goes. I hope someone can help, i'm scared to death. I had a right sided sore throat for 2 years. Finally found out it was tonsil stones and started removing them and have been pretty much pain free on that side for about a month now. My left tonsil is now sore and a bit swollen. I don't think there are any tonsil stones in the left tonsil. I am worried about throat cancer. The pain in my left tonsil has been around since february (that's when I first started complaining about it). I was at the ent for the 8th time in march. He didn't do a scope that time (he has in the past), but used a mirror and said he didn't see anything unusual, just scar tissue. So now it has been 6 months of a left sided sore throat. Ocassionally my ear on that side and my neck will hurt too. Tylenol and throat spray helps a bit too. I should mention that there was a time about a two months ago when I didn't have any pain at all. It lasted about 2 weeks. Does this sound like throat or tonsil cancer? I am 34, a smoker who is has quit a few times and is trying again (5 - 8 cigs a day). Not a heavy drinker.
Thanks so much to anyone who has any ideas.

I've been battling the same thing for 1 -2 years.. I've seen doctors and ents and both say they don't see anything wrong. They've tried antibiotics to see if it could be infected, but they never worked. I doubt it's throat cancer because my understanding is that it would be pretty obvious to doctors. I think you are like me and we just can't get the bacteria and junk to stay out of our tonsils.

Hi mich4, I think the second post is pretty right, I dont think you have throat cancer as the sighns from what I know are pretty visible, however I am not a doctor. I am going to attach a post I have already put on this site to another person, you may have already seen it but if you havent it may answer some questions. I would appreciate it if you would write back and tell me if you notice the same things with your throat that I have. Hang in there and I hope this is of help to you.

"pmarie, I can truly sympathise with you. It sounds like I have the same sort of sore throat. I started getting the symptoms about fifteen months ago. I had the flu at the time so I thought it was from that when it was still sore a week or so later. I went off to the doctor and they gave me some antibiotics, that did no good so they did a swab of the throat to see if there was any bacteria there. All clear there, so they put me on another course of antibiotics but still no joy, in the end they sent me to a ears, nose and throat specialist. He checked down my throat to see if there were lumps to rule out cancer then after finding nothing sent me to a get a scan, I forget what the scan was called but they inject you with a warm liquid and then slide you into a machine that takes x-rays, or something like that, of the area they are checking out. That was again to rule out any cancer. Nothing shoed up and I still had know answer so I asked to see a second ears, noes and throat specialist and after he examined me he said the other specialist was right that there was no cancer and he thought it was post nasal drip. Well I have taken the product called fess that is to spray up your nose for post nasal drip but again no joy. Since then I have been to two other doctors and they have not offered any other solutions either, it is so frustrating!!!!! Just before I started having the throat problems I had some teeth extracted from the top and bottom of my right had side because I was getting pain there, my dentist said there was nothing wrong with the teeth but I said take them out because they were killing me. Anyway to cut the story short after they were taken out the pain, although a lot less, was still in my right hand jaw. I ended up going to a oral specialist and he said that the original pain in my teeth was not from the teeth but from fibro myalgia and myofascial pain, which is what I have had for the last fifteen years since I had a motor cycle accident. Now, as you know, when you are sitting there with your throat aching you try and think of things that could of caused it or be causing it. For me I am thinking maybe getting the teeth pulled out caused the more damage to the jaw which in turn has irritated the throat. I am only clutching at straws but when you have this pain continuously what else can you do. Have you had any jaw problem? I have tried all the things in alternative medicine books for sore throats but still no relief. I have had some times when the pain is not as intense but it is still there, other than that it is full on and driving me up the wall. Well I am sorry if I went on but maybe you recognise something that I am experiencing that you also are going through. I would love to hear back from you with your thoughts and if you have had any luck with finding out what is causing yours.
Take care and I really do hope you get some relief soon because I know how you feel.

Thanks so much for your honest responses. I am still a bit worried, but I feel a litte better this morning. The left side of my throat is not as sore as it normally is, but still sore nonetheless.
These stones are going to drive me crazy, and I don't know what is going on with my left side. A bit swollen and sore, but no stones!
Anyway, keep posting and let me know what you find out. I will do the same.
Thanks,
michelle

Hi michelle, I am glad my rambling was of some use. I am not sure that yours is the same as mine but I thought you might reconize some of the things I listed and relate it to your problems. Well I hope yours clears up soon, I know this is easy to say and real hard to do, but try not to worry as it makes things worse. Shocked each time I do it I tend to fixate on the worst possible out come....I am sure you know what I mean.
Take care,
shane
