Gum Pain
Posted: 07-30-04 07:17am

I had a pain come on suddenly (overnight I think) around my lower right wisdom tooth the other day. It is like the gum is very tender, and moving my tongue over it or touching it is painful.

I am 28, and the wisdom tooth is old and established - it even has a filling in it!

However, when the tooth originally came through, a flap of gum stayed covering the rear-quarter of the tooth. This is not, and has never been painful in any way. The flap of gum is mobile in that I can prise it up (this is not painful either) but it has as far as I recallalways been like this. The dentist who filled this wisdom tooth some time ago must have seen this and though it ok.

The pain is on the tongue-side of the gum to the side of the tooth.

It is not painful to open my mouth/talk/eat etc (unless I chew on that side and catch the gum). It is just the surface of the gum that hurts.

The gum is not red or swollen and has no obvious sign of external damage. I thought I may have damaged the gum eating etc., but can't see any obvious damage.

My teeth are in otherwise good order and I have no problems/pain.

I am currently using bonjella gel on it as this soothes the surface pain.

I am going on holiday tomorrow so can't get to a dentist/doctor for 2 weeks, but I have made an appointment for as soon as I get back in case it still hurts.

Is this just one of these things that will go away on it's own (i have a history of tooth pain in various teeth that comes for a couple of weeks and then goes but never in a gum before).

Hi keith, sounds like that flap may have something caught under it.This is vey common when you have that tissue flap.I don't know how they will treat it for you where you are,but in the u.S. ,we would either trim the excess tissue or remove the wisdom tooth if this becomes a regular problem.Go on holiday and see your dentist when you get back, best of luck!Patty
