Question!
Posted: 08-09-04 14:36pm

Ok .... Sometimes when i'm half asleep-half awake, my heart will start pounding and i'll get this strange "buzzy" or tingling feeling throughout my body. Then, within a matter of seconds i'll feel very tense, almost as if i'm jerking ... And I can't control it. Also, I won't be able to open my eyes or talk. Sometimes i'll also see white flashes of light, similar to lightening almost (even though my eyes are closed). The whole thing will last what seems to be about a minute, maybe a little less. I'll maintain the same level of consciousness throughout the episode (half asleep, half awake) and wake up as soon as its over. I'm never disoriented, though the next day I find myself very fatigued, and unable to concentrate for extended periods of time.

I have a doctor's appt. Next week, but i'd just like to have an idea of what it could be. If anyone recognizes the symptoms, or has any idea what it could be, i'd really appreciate the information!

Also, I don't know if this really had much to do with it ... But I find that I frequently have feelings of "deja vu."
they're not fleeting thoughts though. I'll be having a conversation with someone, and feel as if i've dreamt about it the night before. Sometimes, i'll even feel like I know what they're going to say next. This happens 5 or 6 times a week, most often on days after i've had an "episode" the previous night.

Trying to Answer And a Few Questions
Posted: 08-09-04 16:57pm

Hi,
i'll begin by saying I have no medical background, however, I do have epilepsy and have read a lot about it over the years. What you describe does sound like it could be some sort of seizure activity. The heart pounding thing....A while ago I experienced that and figured out that I was having anxiety attacks and around the same time was diagnosed with post partum depression. Hopefully you will get to the bottom of this soon and your doctor will have some answers for you. How long has it been going on? Is there anything that you can think of that triggers this in you? What do your family members say?
Good luck,
kathy

Thanks kathy ...

This started about 3 years ago when my sister died. And it was happening 4 or 5 times a week for a while. My family and I always just thought it was some sort of strange nightmare resulting from the loss of my sister. I never really thought much of it actually, I just figured it was something that would go away eventually. Earlier this year, the episodes decreased to only 1 or 2 times a week, and stopped completely for a couple of months. But about 2 months ago, they started again. I've had 4 episodes since then. I've tried to keep track of whats going on in my life when it happens ... But I haven't found an obvious pattern. I don't live at home anymore, and I haven't told anyone that its still happening to me ... So really, my family doesn't have much to say about it.

So Sorry

Hi,
i'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your sister. I can't imagine what that must have been like for you. It's not outrageous to think that this loss in your life might have caused these "happenings" to you. Although i'm no medical expert, as i've said before, it sounds like a possibility that this could be linked somehow. Have you ever discussed that with a doctor? If you don't mind my asking, how old are you? I'm sorry if it seems like I ask a lot of questions. I just want to try to help you. It sounds to me like you're trying to sort this out on your own. Is there anyone in your life who you've been able to talk to about this?

Its ok. I don't mind the questions. I'm 17, 18 in december. I never brought it up before, because I actually never thought it was weird or anything. I just thought it was some sort of nightmare brought on by the stress of losing a family member. It just actually hit me the last time it happened that it could be a medical issue or something. I don't really ever talk about it to anyone. Its not that my family doesn't care ... Its just that i'm a very private person most of the time, and don't talk much about personal problems.
